I purchased new mini-flashers on fleabay and installed them on my 81 XJ650 SECA and the lights stay on (no flashing). When I put back the old ones they flash!!

    Any help please.

My blinkers get stuck on when the battery is low and the bike not running. Perhaps your new lights draw more current resulting in a low voltage on the blinker relay and is sticking on? If you had a volt meter you could check the voltages on the relay.

I'm guessing the new mini flashers are LED type. Needs a few changes to compensate for different voltage/current requirements.

Do a search here for LED, as there is a plethora of information covering it.

I just put replacement signals on from Parts-n-more. Because of the wire lengths and rubber seals on the OEM socket I opted to swap my OEM sockets into the new bodies.

After pulling the 2nd bulb from the replacements I noticed it was an 1157 (2 filament) instead of an 1156 (single filament). I inspected the socket and saw that it was a socket for a dual filament lamp and that the red wire went to one filament, the black to the other, and no provision for a ground. Just for grins I hooked up to the bike - low intensity filament lights and no flash.

Long way of pointing out - if you ain't drawing 42 watts (2x21 watt bulb) it isn't going to work right.

You can buy an electronic flasher unit for under $10.
    PepBoys/Autozone/etc
That will solve the problem forever.

how does one wire that puppy inplace of the stock one??

    couple of other thoughts.....

my headlight comes on when i turn on the key....is that normal??? my 82 seca headlight never came on till the engine fired up.

if i put single element turn signal bulbs up front to eliminate them as running lights.....will they still work as signal units??

one more thing....would adding a grond wire to the frame improve electrical operations on theses bikes.....just a thought :)

Single element bulb uses a different socket. You'll need to change sockets to get it to work. Why not keep the running lights, most of us wish we had them?

Extra grounds are never a bad thing.

Not sure if your maxim is the same as my 650 seca... but on mine you just pull out the flasher from under the gastank and plug in the new one...
    Mine is 3 prong.

As I recall from a disection of a dead flasher from years ago, the third pin was simply an additional return for the opposite circuit (right or left, really makes no difference). I would suggest that you take your dead unit and pull it apart for snots and giggles. Might find the problem and fix it.
    Another observation:
My 90 FZR headlight comes on with the key switch, My Seca and Maxim energize when the starter motor has been engaged. I think the newer bikes turn on straight away. But since I've not any experience with the 85s, I'm only making an observation. Hope you get this nailed down and get to riding!

Yikes! My 81 flasher doesn't look quite like that.
The case looks like you can open it, take a peek.
Could be corroded contacts. Easy fix.

dumped a gallon of 91 petro in her last night and hit the trigger.
fired up in no time. sounded pretty good.....let it run for awhile and shut er down. got up this mornin to find gas dripin out the 1-2 carb overflow tube  at first it would not start......but by some grace of god it started.
i figured maybe a float needle stuck.....so i went for a litle ride and it came out of it. at least the signals work good 8)
been about 8 hrs since i shut er down ....no gas leakin......yet....we"ll see in the mornin. never had such bad luck with any bike in my life.

if i can get a inspection sticker on this dang thing im gonna put er on the front lawn. im too old to fiddle with antiques yu cant get the right parts for.
