I recant my last answer. Counter Clockwise leans. The screw is a needle valve. Clockwise closes, Counter Clockwise opens the air circuit it controls. But it only works at idle. Mine are set at about two and a half turns but it seems to vary based on the bike altitude would also have some effect.

I have the Gunson Color Tune. Have used it once just to tryout. I only did the idle test. Was kind of cool seeing the color change. But I guess, to use the tool properly you need to do all three tests. Here is what is recommended:

Sorry, tried to load it as JPEG then GIF attachment, but wouldn't worked. So here is the link to a PDF file instead.

No, you had it right to begin with. CW on the pilots leans them, CCW richens.

The mixture screws (pilot) are adjusting air flow, but that flow is the vacuum which draws the fuel up the pilot jet. So if you unscrew (CCW) you are opening the valve and increasing the amount of vacuum pulling fuel=richer mix.

This jet provides the fuel for idle but also provides the initial fuel charge 'off-idle' until the main jet takes over. Think of them as the 'auto-pilot' for your fuel flow when the throttle isn't involved. Because they are always supplying a 'basal' amount of fuel they will affect mixture but so will: mains, overall vacuum, synch, float settings, air filter, etc.

Colortune works great once you get the hang of it, I did mine today after lots of reading and some confusion on the subject. I hope I got it right. Here is how I understand the process. First make sure you have sync. Carbs - this is a MUST. Then once you have the Colortune on, turn the mixture screw in to, the bottom, then out 2 to 2.5 turns (good starting point). Once bike running with Colortune on turn screws CCW until you get yellow / orange ( equals rich mixture). Then slowly turn the mixture screw back in (CW) until you reach the Bunsen blue - just off the yellow / orange. Turning CW is leaning the mixture out. Be careful not to go too lean, whitish blue, is too lean and bad. After comleting process once, I went back and re checked the carb sync, was out a little so, adjusted and then did Colortune one more time. Haven't taken bike for a ride yet but responds good stationary.

It is a must to take bike out for a run get it up to running temp then while you are running the bike hit the kill switch, stop and then pull the plugs and check the color of the plugs. You want a nice tan to light brown! Color tune is good but you will still have to make some adjustments.

    thanh,

If you have 14mm plugs you'll need a 14mm Colortune. In addition to what everyone says make sure you remove the yics tool and colortune plug to allow them to cool. Overheating will melt the rubber washers on the yics tool and will crack the glass in the colortune rendering it useless. Don't just flip the lever on the yics tool for cooling. Remove it for about 5 minutes. As long as it's in the port of a hot engine the washers are subject to melting. Once you get the hang of it you'll do it fast enough to where you won't have to worry about them overheating. You'll be able to take them out for cooling before you move to the next cylinder. If you see damaged washers while removing the yics tool, replace them on the tool and run a slither of cotton t-shirt through the port to clean it out. Use a straight coat hanger to push it through until you can grab the other end. You'll have to remove the other bolt to do this. Grab some extra washers for the yics tool, Len sells a 3pc. set for inexpensive. You'll need them.
