I just got this bike and with no manual could someone provide some info? I also have a XJ650 and XJ750 and the manuals but none for this bike. This bike is a challenge due neglect.
    1) Spark plug type ___________
    2) Spark plug gap _____________
    3) Oil quantity with filter ______
    4) Oil filter type ____________
    5) Pilot air screw, turns out __________
    6) Float Height setting measurement __________
    7) Carburetor hoses, there are 7 of them. 1 is the fuel line, there are two to the upper portion between 1-2 and 3-4 and then four more, one to each carb. I have removed the air box and am going with POD filters. I saw no place on the air box for them. Are they air breathers? Can I then use small air filters ie fuel filters?

I am running Amsoil 10-40 synthetic m/c oil in my XJ700N with no issues.
I have the UNI foam filter which was with the bike when I bought it.
My pilot screws are at about 2 turns but that might change a lot with pods.
In addition to the fuel line, I think my carbs have only the two hoses between # 1&2 and 3&4. They hang down under the bike and allow the carbs to breathe. there is also a vacuum hose from # 1 to the petcock. I have no idea how you get to 7 unless the po attached short (plugged) hoses to the other three carb vacuum points. If you will send me your email I can send you a pdf copy of the maintenance manual.
My bike has about 11,000 miles on it, starts easily, runs great, but gets only 35 mpg on the highway and about 30 in town. Still trying to figure it out. tabaka45@gmail.com

    Hey tabaka45,

Where do you get the oil filter from? All I have been able to find is the Fram that looks like the regular car filter.

I got a Wix filter from either Autozone or Advance Auto. Call them since they might have to order it over night. Wix comes with the o-ring, and maybe the Fram one does also. yes, it looks just like a small oil filter. Just make sure it is the right number.

Other than the fuel line, there are only two other vent hoses, one between carbs 1 & 2 and one between carbs 3 & 4. They are routed to the bottom of the bike behind the transmission. I'll see if I can get pictures, but the may be hard to see unless I remove the tank.

I'd ask chacal (send him a pm) about the spin on oil filter kit. If it hasn't already been done.

Hey.... I have an 85 and an 86 XJ 700 airhead.... the 4 extra hoses coming off the carbs are atmosphere vents to correct an impossibly lean condition... which was rectified in the 86....

Those four hoses go to each of the big brass vac ports on the left side of each carb body (by the idle mixture screw boss)..........but how does letting air into that port "cure an impossibly lean condition"? It seems extra air would cause it to be even more lean.

Every bike/carb rack that I've seen on the 1985 700 airheads had a rubber blocking cap on those ports.

And yes, they did away with those ports on the 1986 700 airheads.

I have no real knowledge of why they are needed. Fitz or Rick or one of the other pros should be able to tell us. You might have to start a new thread and ask the question.

My Hitachi 33 carbs have only the hoses shown in my picture. The only other places a hose can go is on the vacuum ports on the intake boots which are used to sync the carbs.

Those are 1986 carbs if they don't have the brass port. The 1986 XJ700 airhead carbs were painted black (outer carbs only), while the 1985 airhead carbs were all-natural finish. Wonder how 1986 carbs got on your bike?

Chacal, up there is what the correct carb bodies for my bike would look like yes? Guess I could maybe buy a set for a 700N and rejet then to return originality.

Sorry O/P, I'll stop hijacking now just needed to confirm this detail

Yes, the XJ700 air-cooled models used the HSC33 series carbs too. So did the XJ750RL Seca, but those are also quite rare bikes.

Now that's a good question? My title says 1985--
So you are saying that my bike should have 4 vent hoses rather than two? My carbs are definitely marked as 33's. Where would the four hoses vent to? Other than the hose difference, do you think putting 86 carbs on an 85 bike would make any difference?

Don't believe your title. "Reverse-engineer" the VIN and see exactly what it is.
