It is not clear how long the bike revs before it dies. Please give some more details. IS it a problem you have this spring for the first time?

What model and year of XJ is your bike?

It revs up to about 10 rpms almost all the way up then goes right back down and shuts off. Yes first start since October.

It's a 1982 650 maxim. Cleaned carbs, new gaskets, tubes, new clutch cable, new manifold gaskets. Uni pod filters with open half headers. Jets are 125 and new need position.

    Ran perfect in October....

    Thanks guys,

    Sonny

How many times have you tried to start it? Did it always act the same way? It sounds like your carbs are starving very quickly.

Usually, hi revs are related to a very lean mixture, way too much air compared to gas in the mix, sometimes due to leaks at the carb intakes. But if you had only leak it would die by itself, i guess.

When you cleaned the carbs did you break the rack? After I put all my carbs back together I did not know where to set my Idle screw. That plus the cold temperature made it really hard to get mine started. Took me two days of tinkering and jump start to do the trick. Once it started to try and run it would do the same thing you are describing. I had to just keep spraying the jump start in till it warmed up enough to idle on her own. Then I pulled the idle screw back and it has had no problems since. Dont know if that would help.

Ok! Great, thanks. I suspect osprey is right. I'm going to try what your saying. It may just have to get warmed up.

Osprey, did you tinker all the idle screws?

    Thanks...

When I disassembled the carbs the screws were all 1 1/2 turns out. I set them to 2 1/2 and thinking that was the problem I turned them back in. Now that I have the valves in spec I'm gonna try turning them back out. So I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the problem.
