I have a XJ550. Parked for the winter with a new battery. When trying to start it recently, it was wearing the battery down really quickly and the starter sounded like it was dragging. Finally to the point that all I get is a clicking on my starter relay.

Based on input from an earlier post I have had the battery checked, all good. Replaced the fuse box and the starter relay.

Still getting just a clicking at the starter relay when I hit the start button.

    Help?

Have you got a multimeter? It might be worth checking the voltage across the battery when cranking.

I'm guessing by the click click click you mean it's repeatedly clicking fast if you hold the button down, not just clicking one time? That's usually a sign that the battery isn't supplying enough voltage to activate the solenoid & turn the starter at the same time.

If your battery terminal voltage is over about 9v when holding the button, next check the voltage at the 2 small wires going to the solenoid (red/white and blue/yellow IIRC but doesn't really matter, you'll know the small solenoid wires from the big when you see them :)

You may need to attend to the starter.

When you say "battery was checked" how? Fully charged and load tested at the auto parts store?

The MOST COMMON cause of your symptom is a weak battery. Then the solenoid, which you replaced; then the starter itself.

I'm getting just a one time click when I press the starter button. I can feel the click happening at the solenoid. Battery was fully charged and I had it load tested at the location I bought it at.

I will check the solenoid wires tonight.

Gotcha. Then if the battery is OK, solenoid wiring OK, "test" the solenoid by jumping across the big terminals ***shower of sparks alert*** and see if the starter spins. If no, then you have to investigate the starter.

If it DOES spin by jumping the solenoid, then the problem is the solenoid or associated wiring. Jumpering the two big lugs on it effectively bypasses the solenoid and supplies battery voltage directly to the starter.
