Oil seals for anything always go with the lip facing the direction the oil is trying to escape from (I.E. the spring goes oil side)

wait wait wait, remember your 2 smokers man! the crank seal on the clutch side is "technically" keeping case oil from entering the crankcase, BUT at the same time is is keeping gas/oil mixture that is in the crankcase from entering the clutch case, even though the spring side faces the clutch its still doing 2 jobs at once, but on 4 strokes what you said applies :)

Only 2 smoke I ever had the crank out of (MZ TS250) had 4 seals, 2 opposed each end of the crank, one keeping gearbox oil/air out & the other keeping crankcase compression in ;)

yes many models differ true, i personally like the type you worked on, 2 seals for each side of the crank. but i do have a 77 hodaka in my garage right now im doing a complete rebuild on and its a little different to say the least. it has only 2 seals for the whole crankcase (1 big 1 small), has been sitting for over 7 years after being literally burried in a river, (water sucked threw the intake) water STILL sitting in the crank and stayed sealed. NO water on the stator or clutch :) couldn't believe it
