Anyone know if the CDI unit of an xj750 is compatible with the xj900??

The model number i have is CDI (TID 14-37 58L-10)

    Cheers, Stu

    None of our XJ's have a CDI, it's a TCI :p

Not only me being pedantic, but will help you in searches etc to use the right term. The 750 one will likely allow your bike to run but the timing will be a way out & will lose you a ton of power & possibly cause overheating, so not a good idea I'm afraid.

If you put your incorrect one up for swaps there's a chance somebody will have what you're looking for though

Thanks; and yep after some more research I now know the difference between tci & cdi.

I'll have to source another xj900 tci unit from a similar year.

Hang on, tired so just noticed that you have a 58L TCI? That is a 900 TCI...

What model bike do you have?

Yep I have an 86 xj 900, I've sent off my tci unit to get repaired. Hope to get it back this week!

I was searching for alternatives as the tci units second hand are hard to get a hold of.

Right I get ya :) Do you know what was wrong with it or what caused the failure?

So I sent off my TCI unit to an auto elect (Jack @ City Auto Electrics in Coburg, VIC) who diagnosed that one side wasn't firing.

Not sure if it was a broken solder or if it just needed a cleanup. But $290 later, I have a working TCI unit with a warranty...

Plugged it into my bike and it fired up like normal on all four.

Thats an expensive win, but a win all the same :)

Expensive yes, that's why I was wondering if you knew what caused the failure in case it happened again. Didn't they tell you what they did? I'd wanna know they'd removed, tested & polished n resoldered every part for that money :D

    Glad she's running good :)

tough one. i tried that but the 900 has it's own timing set up not related to 750s etc. Prof. John Oughton owns my old XJ900 and i think he had this issue. Look him up.

    $290? Holy cow!

Most TCI units just need the electrolytic capacitors replaced and a full resolder of every connection. On occasion you may need to replace a coil driver (transistor).

Anyone got any dead units? It may be worth me repairing some and offering an exchange service, as I have repaired ECUs etc as a job for many years and can actually bench run these units.

    A previous play;
    TCI repair

I thought about buying one of the Hyperpack units from NZ but wasn't sure about it... http://bit.ly/106xD06

I couldn't find a second hand one and didn't want to spend weeks looking.

Anyway, carbs balanced & tune done, running perfectly with my pipes :) Pretty stoked > Pic attached

Ah they could sound better; pretty quiet to be honest. However they do look great.

14 months later, same problem :( FML and the repaired TCI unit is out of warranty

    Cylinders 2 & 4 not firing...

Started after riding home in the wet, there seems to be no water getting in under the seat though... what else might be causing my TCI unit to fail?
