On my 1985 XJ 700N Can any one tell me how you keep the Plastic Dust covers down. Is there someting missing on the covers there is a slot on the cover which looks like someting should be in there to hold them down or do they just sit on the rubber dust seal. So when you ride they come up & down on the tub.

If you are talking about the dust covers on the fork legs then yes they are supposed to be driven down in the fork leg to allow the lip edge to hold them in place. If they won't go down because they are hitting the rubber seals then you need to check and 'Make Sure" that the seals are fully seated and in place. There should be a metal circlip holding the seals in. If that is there and seated inside the inner lip then you just need to drive the dust covers down into place.

If you are talking about the Metal, Crome dust seal covers . They just sit there. Nothing holds them down. Gravity maybe.

Well I checked the XJCD and while it says to install the dust seal , that is all it says. Nothing about having to drive it in. Can't tell from the photo for sure if it has a lip for retention but it appears so. The metal chrome piece like Samsr says just sits there. This is an extra piece compared to the 650 & 750. They only have the seal, circlip and dust seal. It still makes sense that the dust seal would have to be driven or firmly pushed into place, otherwise it wouldn't be much of a seal.

You should have, in this order, Oil seal, circlip, dust seal(pressed in) and then the cover. The cover just sits there. Nothing holds it down. I guess you could put some adhesive on there and stick it to the dust seal if you would like. I am gong to leave mine alone. I just got done rebuilding mine. So I am sure that is how they go. You could allways take the cover off if you would like. I think it looks better with it in place.

Are you referring to the chrome cover on the fork tops?

On my 85 XJ700N The chrome covers are molded onto a rubber base that has an extruded nipple on the bottom which goes into the hole on the top of the fork and that tight fit holds it in place

I had to replace one on mine.

Thanks for all the info. But I used 2 small drops of Super Glue and now they stay in place. Because when you a riding and they ride up the front forks it drives me nuts. I just wanted to keep the down.

I had the same problem, the covers would ride up at high speeds. I used double faced tape 1/8 by 1/2 inch. Occasionally would make a tinny sound as they went up, THAT drove me nuts.

Youre talking about the little chrome piece that goes on top of your frok shaft seals?

A small amt of silicone adhesive or contact cement will hold that piece down.
