I have an '82 650 Maxim.I have the original carbs, but they got taken off and "cleaned"....hahaha.Anyway,I put them on and it idles about 3,000 to 4,000 rpms.I know I need to get the tool to sync them but how do you bench sync them to get them close to an idle?

It ran good with the 700 carbs,it was hard to start.

I have new intakes, gaskets and vacuum plugs...Thanx to chacal. :D

Could be you have a vacuum leak somewhere (boots) ? But I guess you said these boots are new. I would check to make sure the carbs are seated properly. Does the idle adjustment make any difference?

    I use (4) 3-Inch long -- 1/4 Inch wide -- Strips of 3X5 Card.
Use the Strips as "Feeler Gauges".

Begin by setting the #3 Throttle Plate by adjusting the Idle Rod.
Adjust the Throttle Plate to just allow the Strip to slide between the Bottom of the Throttle Plate and Carb Body.

FEEL the drag as you adjust the Idle Rod to allow the strip to have some drag.
    Not be tightly captured.
When 3 is right, ... do #4 to Match #3
    Then do 1 & 2

Your finished when you have tweaked all 4 to be the same.

    Gamuru's Guide to Bench-Sync

I've used this as my guide many times, which is fairly close to what Rick describes, and it helps quite a bit. If you can't get the carbs to idle below 2k using either method then you've got carbs outta wack too much. Don't hesitate to ask for more help though

Ideally, the Bench Sync should accomplishes two vitally important Tuning steps:

1.) Mechanically synchronizes the Throttle Plates.

2.) Assures the Throttles are virtually Closed to allow the Pilot Mixture Screws to be set to allow the Plant to IDLE without substantial Air and Main Jet Fuel; saving a lot of time doing Fine Tuning.

if you use a two bottle sync tool you can save yourself the aggravation of removing and replacing the carb rack

Thanx everybody for all the help.It is very appreciated.

What 700 carbs did you have? Have you still got them?

Not sure what they were.I traded them to chacal. He might still have them. They worked fine.Just weren't the right ones for the bike. And I had the right ones already rebuilt.
