Just read a report that confirms Yamaha are to develop a new 3 cylinder XJ putting out about 180hp. Apparently only for US and Europe. Sounds very interesting. 8O

My very first bike ever was an 1980 YAM XS850SG and I loved the heck out that girl. One of my other previous rides was a 2004 Triumph Daytona 600 (unfortunately that was before they put 675 triples in them but it was still pushing about 115HP on a 440lb dripping wet machine), but I've been looking for another triple since the XS850 found another stable (well, I sold to her a buddy of mine and since he's my roomate now, It's technically back in my stable again). I'm looking forward to watching the progress of this proto engine and overall build.
    EXCITED!!! :D

A triple would be awesome, but I'm really excited about their new, all-wire frame, technology.

I was going to get an old XS850 but my friend convinced me that the triple back then was an old-ball thing for that motor. "Get the 4 cylinder" so I got the XJ750.

Now you guys go crazy over a triple?

    Chris.

Those XS triples (750 and 850 specials and midnight specials) are rock solid. Considdered one of the "bulletproof engines". Over 40K on the '80 XS850 and she still fires on first kick (yes, even the xs1100 from those years had a kick start). I miss my kick start:(
Something uniquely cool about a shaft driven triple with dual front/single rear disc from the early '80's.

I would love to see the "Triple" move into production. Trouble is that the updated technology would probably be reserved for the crotch rocket style bikes. One could only hope that maybe then it would trickle down to an affordable machine in a standard style format. Maybe they could re-power the new Bolt with it and call it a "Lightning Bolt"

Funny thing is they're acting like it's some "New" type of engine when they had a triple years ago, and Triumph and MV Agusta have triples in their current models.

Come on Yamaha! Build us an 750 or 850 Triple like Honda did the CB1100 tribute, not some V-twin Harley Poser.

    That is pretty cool.
I rode with a buddy who had an old XS850.
The thing that I remember most is that unique sound.
It was a great running bike.

I have a 80 midnight special. I love the sound and the powerband is great also. Sometimes I kick start her just for the fun of it. It's very satisfying kicking 850 cc's and feeling her come to life.
