First a story, then a question:

I'm having trouble with the fuel valve again, so I took it off only to discover that the valve stem had fallen off in the tank.

    8O bum bum BUM....(dramatic music)

So I took out the fuel sensor and spent the next 30 minutes with my pinkes in the two holes, tossing around the tank to try and grab the stem. With some seriously ninja finger maneuvers, and a lot of cursing, I got it out. Seriously. Ninja.

Okay now the question: Has anyone tried gluing the stem on so this NEVER NEVER NNNNNNEEEEVVVVVVEEEERRRR happens again?

glue will most likely get ate by the fuel at some point in time, then little pieces will go into the carb. prob best to get a new one, i got a new one for mine but didnt go with the vacuum one.

It's old plastic. Don't bother gluing it, get a new one, save yourself the aggravation.

It would be better to replace it if it does not havr a tight fit. I have used two part epoxy to hold them in on some occations. My XS11 has them glued in and its been there for 5 years.

I am wondering if taking a pin punch, and stakeing a few points around it would be enough to hold it in place?

I wouldn't recommend attacking the valve body with a punch, you stand too good of a chance of damaging the mating surface where it mounts to the tank.

Better to just replace it, the new ones are slightly oversize and need to be trimmed to fit anyway.

You can achieve a nice tight fit, get it fully pressed in and it won't fall out:

It probably depends on the source of the parts. I've gotten them from both Len and Yamaha that needed a quick "buzz" (as above) to fit.

I would try weld bond I you can find it. It takes about three days to dry but is completely fuel proof.
