    hey all,

thanks for being here. just found the forum.

just started in on a long sitting 1998 xj600 from california. bought it a few yrs back and it smoked/ticked a little during warm up and then settled down. im told the bottom ends on these are pretty tough so i hope were just talking valve seals here. that's not my immediate problem though. i didnt get started on it until yesterday so now im cleaning carbs and tank and replacing a battery just to get back to the start.

carbs are done (except for needing to replace all of mikuni's junk screws). im wondering if anyone has a suggestion for cleaning the tank without useing a chemical that will cause me recoat it afterwards. id rather not do this if i dont have to.

also, the bike has california emission garbage (i believe some between tank and carbs) and i dont live in california. instead of replacing or cleaning this i am wondering if there is a write up here on how to remove/plug/bypass the charcoal filter and anything else unnecessary.

im surely open to thoughts about the smokeing and ticking as well. im sure with a good scrub i'll be looking that problem in the eye soon enough.

    thanks again,
    rett

Well, here's the thing. If it's anything like my California X, the emissions thing works thusly.

Len tells me (I don't have the proper tank for mine) that a tube runs down the upper inside part of the tank from near the cap to the bottom rear, and connects into what the fiche calls a "rollover valve". Vapor passes through the valve, into the hose, through the emissions canister, and back to a barb on the #2 carb.

So, if you have a California tank on yours, you've probably got that valve coming out the bottom, and a hose barb on one of your carbs. Both would need to be capped off. Plus, since the emissions system also serves as a tank vent, you've likely got a non-vented gas cap, which will need to be replaced with a vented version.

Personally, if it's there and working, I'd leave it as is.

For cleaning the tank, you can use electrolysis or a phosphoric acid flush depending on how bad it is.

I prefer the latter as it won't promote "flash rusting" afterward.

I strongly suggest you check the valve clearances; chances are they've been completely overlooked.

    thanks schmuckaholic

doesnt sound too complex and i probably will leave it in place. was just worried about spending a lot of time cleaning/ a lot of money replacing emisions junk that i dont need to have out here in nevada.

phosphoric acid flush wont make a fresh tank coating necessary? sounds like the way to go to me.

im sure the valves have been overlooked. i think this could stop the smokeing/ticking but im trying not to get my hopes up. my luck never goes that way. my intention was to get into the valves this weekend and when i pulled the carbs and they came off without a fight i had to stop myself from snatching off the valve cover. one thing at a time, or maybe two things. well really im already doing six things at once. maybe next sunday i will check those valves.
    thanks

I just got a 82 Seca 650 with California Emission. It has been in a warehouse for 12 years. I am going to bring it to life slowly (soaking with small amounts of oil in spark plug holes) When I go through each area of fuel and air and carbs and whatever, will I be able to remove any and all "restrictions" with no trouble. I actually do not not know if I will recognize these controls when i see them. Does anyone know exactly what I can remove?
