Xj550 all balls steering bearings

    I used the recommended kit for my Seca 750 and had no troubles at all.

    i also used them on my 750, and its all i use on my dirbikes. and yes much better ride.

    1. The bearings won't fall all over the floor when you go to clean and repack the bearings.

    2. The top bearing race for the tapered set may sit slightly proud of the headstock, but will not cause any issues upon reassembly.

    3. The new bearings should (if they are of sufficient quality) have a longer effective service life due to the load being spread over a larger surface area, and there is next to no chance of a bearing sliding instead of rolling, which can happen in uncaged ball bearing assemblies.

    The main reason I went with the All Balls kit was laziness. I didn't want to take the time to take measurements so I could find tapered roller bearings on my own. Should the bearings in that kit show signs of premature wear it'll be easy to take them to a bearing house and cross them to bearings from Timkin or SKS.

    yea i had a couple balls pop out of my old ones while it was on the bike, i know this cause there were a bunch of "snake like" lines on my steering neck lol

    I used the All Balls kit on my Seca 550. It was a nice improvement.

    Tapered bearings are a major improvement over stock loose balls.

    A larger surface area to spread the weight out makes notched steering a non-issue.

    As k-moe already said, the new bearings will protrude a bit over the head stock - and that is completely NORMAL and OKAY.

    Whats nice about the all-balls kits is they have all the seals included.

    I have used their kits for the wheel bearings on my maxim, and have already bought all balls front and rear wheel bearing kits as well as the tapered steerer bearing kit for the 550 seca that i'm restoring currently.

    They have killer prices on multiple useful things, i paid ~20$ for new EBC shoes and and ~23$ for new EBC pads.

    Thats also where i got a bunch of other things, and their prices on clutch kits and springs cannot be beat.

    also picked up new sprockets and chain from them.

    shoot you'd think they pay me to say that, hahaha.


    ANYWAY -

    Depending how much expierience you have wrenching, if you get the tapered bearing kit from len, he includes a great set of step-by-step instructions with the kit, which is really nice. Sure the price is a bit more, but if it saves you 2 hours of headaches, its worth it imho.

    But if you've replaced head tube bearings in the past, and you're just wondering bout the benifits of tapered vs not, and the quality of the all balls kits, thats a good way to go too.

    Isunt there a groove in the dust cap?

    If you're talking about what I think you are, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

    I actually emailed all balls racing yesterday and you don't use the stock dust cap cause they provide the one for you in there kit, looks kinda funny not being there but it works great

    i dontt think i got one in my kit, i used the stock one. if i remember right you have to otherwise you have clearence issues
