converting stock 7/8" bars to 1" ape hangers

I wanna use 1" diameter ape hangers with a 14" rise on my stock 7/8" clamps. I can't seem to find the correct riser adapter. I wanna convert from 7/8" to 1" bars. Does anybody know where I can find the riser adapters I need

 

I do not think they make such an adapter, why not take your clamps to a machine shop and have them ream the inside of your clamps to 1"? Its an overall 1/8" change yielding 1/16" off the radius. Very doable.

 

Why not just use 7/8" ape hangers?

 

Or, get some 1" clamps and ream out the stud mounting hole in the top of the triple tree.. one of the members here did that successfully not too long ago. Maybe he'll chime in with some advice.

Why not?????? Nothing wrong with 7/8" but then again nothing wrong with 1" either, some people prefer the "look"... It's his bike, to do with what he wishes IMHO

Obviously all the controls & switchgear would need changing too if you go to 1" but as far as mounting goes, shouldn't be too much trouble for a machine shop to take the clamps out to 1" as mentioned, or to have the yoke adapted to take purpose built 1" clamps

 

I already bought the apehangers. Off a Harley 1200 sportster. Guess ill just have to take the 7/8" to 1 1/8". Use shims to reduce it to 1". Any easy fixes?

I think you may have misread what was suggested. You can have the clamps reamed to 1". The material removed equates to a 1/8" change in diameter (from 7/8" to 8/8"), not a 1 1/8" hole.

If you live in a urban environment; Ape Hangers can get you hurt.

In the Summer '79 Issue of CycleWorld; Apes and other Handlebars were tested for handling.

In a sudden evasive maneuver, your whole body gets out of position for being able to counter-steer with the strength needed to safely complete the maneuver.

You may wind-up throwing yourself off the Bike or being unable to prevent a "High-side" dumping, ... that could mean an ambulance-ride to the nearest ER.

Whatever happened to being constructive & looking for solutions in the modifications section? Why don't we just rename it "XJ do NOT modify section" and be done with it? :roll:

P.S. not saying the advice about handling isn't valid by the way, although we know people who fit apes aren't looking for a taut handling ride. But suggesting the owner should have bought a Hardly Dangerous.... c'mon son!

 

In Florida if the hand grips are higher than your shoulders the bike is considered illegal. fyi...bit of legal trivia...but we also don't have a helmet law...go figure...lol

 

On my XS,I used Suzuki Savage risers.They bolted right in,and the bars are 1".Usually can get a set from ebay for around 20 bucks.
