Welcome Myro, and congrats. It sounds like you're gonna have your hands full.

I would suggest you also inspect / replace the rear brake shoes, as they delaminate over time. There's a few threads on here about that. ALso, the tires should have codes on them, indicating build date. Over 6 years can be considered fail points. Also, the front brake lines are meant to last 4 years, i believe, so those are a point of failure as well.

You didn't list the carbs, and I'm wondering if they will need attention. Most setting bikes will need carbs at least cleaned. There's a number of threads in this site relating to that ( church of clean ), so poke around in the site, check out Chacal's information posts, and research before you go too far. Most things that can go wrong have been posted about in here regarding the XJs.

Have fun but be safe first.

Havent looked at the brakes yet and im hesitent to take the carbs appart and the was the guys daily driver up untill abut a week before I bought it from him so it was rode all year long so unless I have a problem when I put it back together I dont plan on touching the carbs as for brake lines wouod be a good idea

You might want to re-think that "not touching the carbs" thing; as well as check the valve clearances asap.

This is NOT a case of "ignorance is bliss." If you have a misadjusted float or a couple of too-tight valves, you could well be on your way to damaging the motor and you won't know it until it's too late and it quits on you.

You can't just deny the existence of things when it comes to a thirty year old bike; what you don't know CAN hurt you.

Think I read in another post that the idea was to seek out a "quick flip", well I'm wondering if it'll work out that way or if you'll become addicted lol these bikes have a way of getting under your skin :)

What the guys say about checking & cleaning carbs, setting valves etc is true, you don't know what hidden delights are waiting to catch you out unless you look. Might end up spending some cash in the short term but saving a heap on a recon head or set of pistons & rebore in future by catching any issues early enough...

after getting the pan off and the side covers of the transmission tonight and seeing all the paste from the from water mixing with the oil im with out a dought going to have to check the carbs and a valve adj. is a mist on every new bike i get and also i had a mis. part in the bottom of the oil pan i think its a chain guide so it looks like the top en may be coming apart also (take a pic of it as soon as my phone charges)

as far as getting addicted i don't plan on riding it as then i wont sell it

That bit of plastic *could* be the primary chain guide breaking up.

From what you say about the water in the cases I think you'll be best doing as you are doing & stripping the motor down, replacing any damaged bearings/chains/guides & carefully checking the starter clutch as well (they can crack & need the cases splitting to replace)

If you're going that far you may as well keep the bike & get some pleasure out of it for your time! :)

Not "could be." IS. You can see the broken bit in one of the pics, and it's NOT a cam chain guide. The cases will have to be split. I would highly recommend acquiring a factory service manual before splitting the crankcases; there are a lot of non-intuitive details that if overlooked, could deal a death knell to the motor once it's back together and you fire it up.

Have a word with BigFitz about that, he's been elbow deep in XJ clocks doing some nice conversions/swaps/repairs & might have some tips to either fix your speedo or find a suitable replacement ;)

final got around to splitting the transmission section of the motor and came to find that the 1-2 fork was bad not the gears so the parts i have are useless in that retrospect now i just need to find someone with a tank big enough to dip the motor parts
