    Hey fellas,

I'm all 'searched out' with no luck.....yet. :D Im wondering if there is a solution for the ultrasonic carb cleaners that does NOT take the black paint off of midnight carbs..... but still cleans the carbs well...

    Anyone with experience doing this????

Is it easier just to repaint them after????

    Thanks in advance...

    Lol.

I have a 2 1/2 gal machine and I'm just getting to know it......would water and simple green take the paint off?? The carbs need a good cleaning.

    Thanks.

maybe try a float bowl first but if the paint is actually attached like it should be, i doubt it will come off.
i've found after aluminum comes out with all the oil removed it gets that white corrosion real quick. so a rinse with clean water and a quick spray of LPS1 is needed

Personally (I'm getting personal a lot lately 8O ) I don't rate ultrasonic for carb cleaning anyway, it can't get into all the tight places that a person with a bit of wire can. Also, for any bigger blockages the ultrasonic can only work on the very outer edges of it.

OK it's fine for cleaning the gunk off bodies, but I'd advise you trust the actual internal cleaning to your own hands since you don't want to be doing it more than once...

This http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14692.html is a fantastic thread & the one that I followed. Makes for a lot of reading but I'd rather read this word for word 50 times than remove/replace my rack of carbs 5 times.... :)

Yes, that's right! I have to get a solution that doesn't corrode the aluminum as well...I think I will do a bowl to start with and see how it affects things. I did do the reading on the solutions and their affects.... I just didn't see any mention of how the black paint stood up to it. I have spare carbs to play with... Just not ones painted black. :(

Thanks Bloke, good info... However I have been cleaning carbs by hand for a few years and I will continue to do so as well.... The ultrasonic cleaner does clean faster and better in my opinion.... ONLY if your using it correctly... Checking passages after with compressed air and cleaner I will do after as well.

I did have to pull the rack again after cleaning by hand. I also noticed the carb cleaner spray taking off the paint (the first time) so I started to be carefull with it. :( lol!!!

I have been chasing a lean condition (white plugs). First I adjusted the mix scresw out a 1/4 turn each. Did that twice. No change. Then I pulled the rack. Cleaned; replaced Gaskets and seals too... No luck. I checked for an airleak with WD40(never thought of propane!) . No luck. Have adjusted the floats 3(?) times as there is a slight stumble when taking off. The result was #1 rich, #2 tan, #3 and 4 white still with the floats 3-4mm out of spec now, on the rich side ..

So.... I am going to start over and make sure the carbs are clean. I assume there are passages that are not fuuly clear (pilots) And.. I am going to replace the vacuum caps with new ones...put the fuel level (wet) back into spec, and double check the slides.
The bike is stock. Stock air filter, exhaust, etc etc. The valve clearances were put into spec over the winter. New plugs gapped. Other than the stumble, and the white plugs, the bike ran awesome!

Have I missed anything?? And... Should I do the running sync(with yics tool) before checking the plugs after o 30 min ride? (I assumed that the mixture would not be affected by the sync.)... Or sync after all is said and done?

    Thnks eh!

The ultrasonic cleaner did not take the black paint off. I had it on for 45mins in heated Simple Green and water. All good.
