Just purchased at 33K (approximate). Top end is quiet, only weeping oil at a head-gasket "donut" and the tach drive seal...seems strong. Will report back once brought fully back to life.

Mine came with 32K on the clock, unsure if this is genuine on a 30 year old motor, racked up a few thousand more and running ok so no complaints.

Pretty sure that some on the site have some real high mileage models though!

One of the guys as XS11.com was mentioning awhile ago his XS11 (essentially the same engine as the XJ1100) had 120K miles and he was thinking of doing a ring job. If you care for any quality bike and don't muff if by being stupid & neglecting known maintenance areas, you can get high mileage and a reliable bike.

Some things are just needed improvements over the original like the fuse box needing to be replaced by a flat slotted fuse holder.

I have 33k now, from 26k when I bought it.

As much as there are parts that simply wear from use, or require constant replacement - like filters - heavy use is much better for others. A frequently run engine stays lubricated.

My less-than-knowledgeable example: It's like air conditioning on cars, lack of use - due to owner's fear of wearing it out - is why they fail. They have lubricants in the refrigerant that need to circulate on a regular basis.

I remember talking to a guy in CO in the 90s that had a 2 yr old ford explorer - the 4WD failed the first snow he tried to use it in. Because he hadn't engaged it in 2 effing years.

With the aircon it's to do with the seals drying out if not used often, then the gas escapes... Applies to most seals though really, once they've had some use & then are allowed to dry out they harden & go *pop* :(

It's true that constant heavy use/regular maintenance is much better for any vehicle than light use/standing. I believe Myro has a Ranger with near a half mil' on the clock that's still great & I've known CX500's to rack up 250k treated with respect (just that very few were!)

I've got over 110,000km (69,000 miles). Of course it's on the second engine, but I swapped the original one for more power (and fun) not because it wore out.
Neglect is the main cause of death for these bikes, not wear. Best thing you can do for your bike is maintain it and ride it.

I have bought 1991 xj600 with ~46 000 km on odometer, but because he have a "short" odometer ( counts only up to 99 999 km, and then again as "new" - 00 000), i dont know real mileage. i think, it be more like 146 000 or even 246 000, because engine make some not so good sounds, when working, and footpegs and steering handles show a some wearing. try to attach pics - maybe anyone can +/- give me a real number, based of that parts wearing?

that seems consistent with 46000, I had an 82 xs400 that was wore and rough like that but it only had 20 000kms

sounds like your engine is probably overdue for some regular maintenance.

very strange. why wear appear in that very early mileage? and then, what is that parts wearage on 100 000, 200 000, and even million km bikes ( i hear, there is fj1100 with 1 million mileage! )?
also, i can say - i have cars with 320 000, 370 000, 430 000 km mileages, and its look ok on wearing parts, like as rubber on pedals, steering wheels and so on. on 20 - 70 000 km mileages that cars must be like a new, without any visible wearing at all - why on motorcycles all seems different, as you say?
it be clear, wear is be different on travelling bike, who make a 100 - 200 - 500 km per day, and on city bike, who get a 20 - 30 km on day, but not that dramatically, for wear out more than millimeter rubber on handlebars, and more than 2-3 millimeters on some positions on footpegs only for 30 - 50 000 kilometers? :-O

Any engine can be completely worn out before 5000miles OR like new at a million miles, it all depends on how it was treated in the past. If your bike has been abused/missed oil changes/run low on oil/overheated it could be worn out no matter if it is low mileage or not.

Another point to consider is that 30 year old air cooled engines were less tolerant to abuse than modern water cooled units due to manufacturing tolerances and less ability to dissipate heat.

Scrubby's Ram is a good example of what a well cared for vehicle can do (three quarters of a million miles for crying out loud! :D ),
A good example of what ignorance/abuse can do is a friend's ford 3000 tractor engine with under 1.5hrs work on the clock, it's totally seized and fit for scrap because it was run low on oil...
