Hey guys. Something started happening right before end of season last year. Bike gets warmed up go for a ride and it seems two cylinders drop almost seemed like not getting fuel. So i started thinking over winter that when my old odyssey started dying like this it was the coils. Now given that that bike is old (82 XJ1100) and that they appear stock I am just going to replace them. But i have no clue what to replace them with. Is there specific ones or can i just go with a generic set?

    Thanks

3 ohm coils, are the valves set?

I have no clue. It was running fine the rest of the season.

Starts fine cold, won't start (or drops cylinders) once warm is a classic symptom of some tight valves.

It could also be ignition related; do you know WHAT cylinders are dropping? (1-4 fired by one coil, 2-3 by the other.)

Back to valve adjustments: This is something that has to be done every 5000 miles (after the intial check at 3K.) If neglected they will tighten up and eventually start having issues, especially when warm. If you've put more than 5000 miles on this bike and have never checked your valve clearances, do so asap.

I would also advise not running the motor any more until you've done so.

I've only put about 2k on it but I have no clue as to when it was last done. Guess that is another thing to check out. Any tutorials on here for that?

I have 2ft of snow blocking my garage door so there is no risk of running it for a while yet lol. Thanks for the info.

    ***NOTE***

The clearances and the "shim charts" in my article do not apply to the 1100. The procedure, appearance of parts, etc., is the same; but your clearances are different:

    XJ1100 Intake: 0.11 - 0.15mm (= 0.004" - 0.006")
    XJ1100 Exhaust: 0.21 - 0.25mm (= 0.008 - 0.010")

Alright finally got warm enough for me to look at the bike. I noticed that the mounting bolts were loose on the coils. Would this cause an issue like this?

Also I just took them off and tested the coils both are reading a solid 3ohm.
