YICS XJ650 firing order

    Can anyone tell me which plug wire goes to which plug I cant seem to find a simple stright awnser.

    My '80-'81 manual shows the wires making straight runs from the two ignition coils, i.e. the left two cylinders from the left coil and the right two from the right coil, outside contact to outside plug, inside contact to inside plug.

    Would It make a difference on a Yics motor? (1982 650)

    Either coil can be used to fire either "set" of cylinders (1/4 or 2/3), BUT, the primary lead wires from the TCI need to be hooked up properly.

    The primary input wire to the 1/4 coil is grey.

    The primary input wire to the 2/3 coil is orange.


    BOTH coils also use a (common) red-with-white-tracer stripe wire as the return path back to the TCI.

    I can only get the thing to run with the left coil (outside lead) on 1 and inside lead on 4 Right coil inside 2 outside 3

    Are you sure? I don't see how that could be correct. All the inline 4s should have the same firing order. EVery XJ I have worked on is 1-4 and 2-3. But I have not worked on a 750....

    The important thing is to make sure that your PRIMARY INPUT WIRES (from your TCI module/main wiring harness) are oriented properly:

    The primary input wire to the coil that fires the #1 and #4 cylinder plugs is grey.

    The primary input wire to the coil that fires the #2 and #3 cylinder plugs is orange.


    Once you have that right, it doesn't matter which spark plug wire from an individual coil goes to either plug..........in other words, for the coil that has the GREY primary input wire attached to it......which automatically "makes" that coil the #1 and #4 cylinder coil.......then it matters not which PLUG WIRE FROM THAT COIL goes to cylinder #1 or to cylinder #4. That one coil fires BOTH plugs at the same time.....that's why it doesn't matter which plug wire goes to which cylinder.

    I know this thread is old but I'm pretty sure that GREY to 1-4 is NOT correct....at least It's not on my XJ 750. My bike only fires and runs with ORANGE on 1-4. I get absolutely nothing to happen if I put GREY to 1-4.

    I'm in the same boat as this guy, '82 xj650j. Grey is defintely 2 and 3 just wen't out to the shop and checked.

    Whoops....you guys are correct! Here is the updated info:

    * on the primary side of the coils, the proper colored leads from the TCI must be hooked up to the proper coil......see below.

    - the ignition coil for the #1/#4 spark plugs is mounted on the left side of the bike, and has the solid orange (ground) wire and the red-with-white-tracer-stripe (hot) wire input leading to it.

    - the ignition coil for the #2/#3 spark plugs is mounted on the right side of the bike, and has the solid grey (ground) wire and the red-with-white-tracer-stripe (hot) wire input leading to it.
