Stupid petcock question

Hey guys, I feel dumb even asking this, but here goes .... I ordered some petcocks from Len the other day (by the way if you need something, he's the way to go. He's probably got anything you need, and he's super helpful too). At any rate, the petcocks come with a piece of clear vinyl tube around the shorter fuel filter (I'm not sure which one is main, and which one is reserve, but I'm guessing the shorter one is reserve. At any rate, I'm not sure if that was on there to protect the fuel filter during shipping, or if I'm supposed to leave it on to keep sediment from clogging the filter? My inclination is to take that tube off (it's not mounted or anything, just sits on there); but thought since this is my first motorcycle, and first time I've done this, I should probably ask.
