OK guys, I'm going to pull the carburetor and break apart and rebuild it. Never done this before so wish me luck! Lots of pics, so let me know if you all see anything that's wrong.

That's AWESOME.....she can handle a wrench! You're good to go, man. Others will be jealous--they have to fight for time to work on a bike. LOL

I saw some carbs in a similar state like that about 3 year ago, plenty of hard work ahead.

pay particular attention to the float bowls and the small enritchment passage.

I softened the varnish by cooking them in boiling water and then blasting with an air line and carb cleaner blown through the small passage.

    Good luck

That looks like fun... looks like it was ridden without filters or maybe a broken box but don't forget to prod every single hole you see and triple check float levels (done that before) and don't forget the advil for the 6 hours your going to be hunched over those carbs otherwise goodluck

OK everything has been taken apart and cleaned in Chem-Dip.

If you chem-dipped them like that, you're gonna have problems.

The air jets are still in, the emulsion tubes are still in, the needle valves are still in--and if they never came out before, then the screens and stuff that the screened 'screened' are still in there...... and worst of all.....your throttle shafts are still in.

You must TOTALLY dis-assemble before dipping.... the dip will do funky things to the throttle shaft seals. If you don't tear them down the rest of the way are replace them, You're all but guaranteeing yourself a headache when you have to tear the whole rack apart to replace the seals. That would be after you get the bike back together and find that it runs crappy because of air leaks causing lean conditions....

Otherwise, they are coming out nicely.

Second what hogfiddles said. You need to pull EVERYTHING off of the carb body and THEN dip them (if you didn't). Then probably a good flush with compressed air or canned carb cleaner through all of the passages will make sure there's no residue left behind.

It's an especially moot point because you did break the rack...there's absolutely no better time to replace the throttle shaft seals. Same goes for fuel supply tube o-rings. It is best to replace these things anyway (i did on both of my rebuilds) and many newbies like to argue about getting that far into breaking the rack. But you're THERE already!

Also, go buy some aluminum cupcake tins, the wells are perfect for keeping the parts organized by carb and step in the disassembly. Plus you can even soak the jets in carb cleaner in the wells. Much better than the pile of parts you've got in the last pic.
