Need quick help replacing rear brake shoes

    Hey guys

    I know I need the manual for stuff like this, but I've gotten pretty far without it, and I'm low on funds.

    82 xj650 Maxim

    I just need to know how to get to the rear drum brake shoes to replace them there's a cauter pin (don't know how to spell that) on the left (if sitting on the bike) side of the rear wheel, but I have no idea if I need to pull that to get to the brakes, since the brakes are on the right side (i think).

    Thanks for any help!

    You need to pull the rear wheel to access the drum. To do this, you have to remove the rear wheel axle. First step is to remove the cutter pin that prevents the axle nut from loosening, then remove the nut and pull the axle from the opposite side (right). Of course you also should unbolt the brake rod (you probably figured that out) and then pull the wheel out from the right side of the frame.

    One thing to add that you left out Quebecois, the cinch bolt on the right side. Need to loosen that as well before you pull the axle.

    as well as the brake rod, there's the torque arm too. That's pretty obvious though once you get into it.

    Awesome, thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed. I just wasn't sure where to start the from staring at the thing last night.

    I'm pretty sure I say this every time my questions get answered, but it's true. You guys are awesome!
