I'm setting the fuel levels in my carbs following chacal's instructions, mostly. I was hanging the carbs by straps from the rafters to get them level, which worked very well, except that I had assemble the whole carb rack, which poses some problems.

I connected the gas tank, but much fuel kept coming out of the vent tubes. Eventually the carb bowls filled, but I wasted lots of gas each time I connected the tank. After a couple rounds adjusting the tang arm, I decided this set up was too difficult.

So...I'm going to get some supplies to rig up something where I can work on one carb at a time without having to move it much.

Questions: how do I get enough fuel in the bowl without wasting it out the vent tubes? and where do I connect it?

Bending the tang arm closer to the float needle reduces the amount of fuel in the bowl right?

Thanks! But where do I connect the gas tank to a single Carb?

You are supposed to connect the fuel tank to the main fuel intake, just like when you're running your bike. All carbs would share the same fuel supply while setting the float levels. Each float works individually anyhow, so there is no point at trying to feed a single carb.

It's really not practical to fuel just one carb. You need to fuel all four, drain fuel to reuse, repeat.

As pointed out earlier, even with the adjustment way out of whack they shouldn't fill until the vents flow. You've got something that won't close - either because of wear or mis-assembly.

Ok. I am very confused. I tightened down all the valve seats. I bent all the tangs way up so as to close the needle in the seat sooner.

I still have the exact same problem as before. Gas is connected to the main intake. When it pours in, gas comes splashing out of the tubes between carnal 1& 2 and 3 & 4. Furthermore, I barely had any fuel in Carb 4 and the same amount in Carb 3 as measured before I adjusted the tang.

    What is going on?

Are you saying that fuel is spilling out of the fuel transfer tubes and onto the bench? Did you replace the o-rings that are on them. If there is leakage at those tubes you'll never get the floats to work correctly.

This is what I did and it made it a bit easier. I fashioned out of ¾” PVC a carburetor holder that held the carbs up off the bench by 6 inches. I used squeeze bottle with a narrow tip for my fuel supply with about 1 foot of clear tubing for the fuel inlet. I connected the tubing to the carbs and when I needed to add fuel to test the float level I did so by holding the fuel line tubing to the tip of the bottle and added fuel slowly until it backed up in the fuel line. Then attach another piece of tubing to the carb drain and loosen the drain screw while holding the tubing to check the wet level. You then can drain the gas in that bowl back into the supply bottle. I would remove the bowl with a stubby screwdriver while the carbs were still on the holder to do the float adjustment. This way you do not have to drain the other 3 bowls each time you want to adjust one. Not an artist by any means, but this is what it looked like..somewhat..[IMG][/img]

So you fitted the fuel rail into the breather vents & breather tubes into the fuel holes? D'OH!

That's the benefit of taking notes/pictures before you strip :D

Glad you're sorted now & it wasn't anything too major!
