I am new to this site and very excited about my first XJ bike.

I bought the bike with one purpose, to custom a bobber from it, but before I can get there, as can be seen from the subject line, I don't know what year model it is or what specific model (Maxim, Seca, RH, R etc.).

I don't have any papers on the bike and the previous owner just knew that it was a XJ 750.

Any advise on how to find out definitively what year and model it is?

    Awesome....thank you so much.

Then a follow up question, where can I find a user, service and factory manual for this bike? Preferably in pdf format....

    Welcome!

Make sure you put on new tires, new brake lines, new shoes, new pads, and check the valve clearances before you ride it.

Look around and ask questions, we're here to help!

    Peace!

    Welcome to the forum Theocoria.
1st off, you say no paper work and the previous owner didn't know what bike he had. Do you mean you don't have a title or ownership or just the history of repair and maintenance on paper?
If it's no title, establish ownership before you procced any further, then get a manual and concentrate on getting the engine running properly (valves checked/set, carbs cleaned/set, new plugs, fluids etc) when it's running well then look at getting it to stop/ride well (brakes, tires, suspension etc)
Ride it for a while, then do your custom work, been a few times where people get bikes and tear them down only to find they have opened a can of worms their dreams become nightmares and we never hear from them again.

Thanx for the welcome Maxim-X. Must say I'm finding the subject matter on the forum very helpful. The no paper work refers to no history of maintenance, repair, manuals etc. The paperwork for the sale is fine and handled. Got a very comprehensive manual today, very shuffed with it. I've started taking parts of yesterday, cleaning as I go along. There is a lot of grease build up. Next thing wil be the engine and lines and carbs etc. The bike still sounds pretty good, but yeah, I realize the value of getting the engine running perfect before going any further....will keep you posted. And thanx again for all the help thus far.

Nice ride, interesting candidate for a bobber project though, I figure it would be more along the lines of a cafe project instead. But, to each his own :)

I am sure somebody at some point will tell you to check the rear brake shoes for de-lamination. You wouldn't want the rear wheel to lock up at speed! Here is the write up to check it :)
