Has anyone made a tutorial about inspecting the alternator brushes? The Haynes manual has a very basic text about it and I like pictures, did anyone make that? Or as part of another tutorial?

I can't find the thread anymore, but another guy was having the same problem I am and the answer was either the battery or the alternator brushes with most people saying it was probably the battery. I'm going to get it tested tomorrow, but if it isn't, I'd like to see what I'm up for :).

If by inspecting you mean just looking at them, go for it! It is probably one of the easiest things you can do.

What is your problem you have going on?

Where are they? What parts do I have to take out to access them?

The runs wonderful, but if I stop it and let it sit for a while, the starter motor will turnover, but it'll take a while for the engine to start. I read that when the battery starts getting old it sometimes lack power to also provides a spark. It started happening last year periodically and now this year it's nearly every time.

On the left side of the motor under the carbs there's a bowl shaped cover with 3 allen-head screws. It pulls right off and the brushes (2) are in a spring-loaded brush holder.

The brushes need to be 11MM or longer and all the dust and grit needs to go without using strong carb cleaner !!

While you are in a cleaning mood - clean the battery groundstrap at the motor and start in on your "3 hour - clean - every - connection" ritual.
