    I was wondering If it would be a good idea to place some oil or something on the rubber membrane which is connected to the top of the round slides that go into the carburetor. Something that would maybe preserve its flexibility and life

    They are called diaphragms.
    Not heard of your idea before, but thinking about it now maybe a coating of Plastidip could help. It has been used to repair diaphragms before.
    But to be honest with you i reckon they should last at least 30,000 miles before they start to deteriorate.

    NOOOO.

    Replace them if bad; you can try to repair with liquid electrical tape. Plastidip will likely change their flexibility "properties."

    From Chacal's XJ catalog.....

    "bb3) HCP8540 Aftermarket carb diaphram rubber RnR FLUID. Dissolved and chlorinated paraffin wax is the best (and perhaps the only) way to safely bring some life back into stiff, worn rubber material... such as that found in those all-important carb piston diaphrams. Years of hard life inside of your carb take their toll, and whenever your carb is apart for service, and generous application of this product will help to clean, maintain, and restore the flexibility, while prolonging their usable service life. 10cc dripper bottle contains enough fluid to do about eight diaphrams. Simple to use, spread on, wait a few seconds, wipe off, repeat and you're done!
    $ 9.95"

    Thanx for the information. I have them apart and just thought it would be a good preventive measure.
