my 82 650 maxim backfired and lit the tank up. now after re wiring it i lost spark at cylinders 2 and 3. checked conections all are good, resistance at coils tested good even swapped coils with 1 and 4 with no luck. also changed pick up.

does any one know what the issue could be?

Welcome and sorry to hear about your bad luck. Backfire? What issues have you had pre-fire?

i just did an engine swap an was re doing the bike frrom the ground up. i was waiting on the exhaust to come i just had the down pipes on it. i later found out the petcock was stuck open pouring fuel into the carbs. so much for the nice pant job i gave it. but on a bright note it is salvageable. and i learned not to over look the little things like petcock valves. it was running decent befoe it reminded me how much i missed a good bon fire

plugs 1 and 4 get good spark plugs 2-3 get none.
if i swap coils from 1and 4 with 2-3 the results dont change telling me that the coil is good. im getting 12v to the coils resistance test were good i believe they were around2.2 on each coil resistance to pick up was 6.7. by passed all relays as per chacals write up. for troubleshooting. feeling pretty lost with this one

Either one pick up coil is faulty, or you have damaged the TCI.

I was thinking the TCI was shot. I have changed everything else in the ignition system.and been up and down the wire harness multiple times looking for a short. Does anyone know where I can get a TCI for it?

Testing is a problem for us mortals, best method is to swap it with a known good one, that's the next problem, finding someone who will lend you theirs.

    WELL..... THAT CERTAINLY SUCKS....

I was thinking.... are you sure that you didn't melt some wires in your harness, or that they aren't hooked up right?

i had a spare harness and changed it out the old harness was pretty much toasted. as much as it sucked I couldnt help but laugh. ive been working on this bike for months. im not going to worry about the cosmetics until i get it running right. I already have to re-redo the tank. I did have a nice bonfire that weekend though. without the bike .

If the Tachometer is electronic this might help

I had an issue with my first XJ750 that cylinders 2 and 3 didn't fire. Found that the grey wire that feeds the coil for 2 and 3 also feed the Tachometer and the tach was shorted out. I unpluged the tack and it fired up just fine.

where is the plug for the tach. and if it makes a difference the tach does move when cranking.

The plug would be in the headlight bucket. I have XS1100 Gauges on My 83 XJ750. The Tachometer is not hooked up at all but it does jump around when starting the bike.

The way I found the short was to disconnect the TCI and check to see if the Grey wire was grounded.

If that wire is fine then as Wizard stated the TCI is the most likely problem.
