As they are the only means of adjusting fuel / air mixture, they must effect the whole rev band.

Thanks for the help. I have been riding on the highway and the bike runs very nice. I don't need to downshift when I want to pass and although I want to obey the posted speed limit, people in cars ALWAYS want to pass me for some reason. I try and find an empty spot in traffic and stay there in either the far right or far left land incase I need to use the shoulder/emergency lane. Anyway, the bike is getting like 57 or 58 mph on the highway with a medium sized windshield. This is after it is warmed up and 99.5% at 55mph and over and almost never at a steady speed because of tailgating traffic.

I get complements from people about how smooth the bike idles and how it must be tuned perfectly. If I shut it off for 15 minutes after a long ride, it is a little hard to start and runs a bit rough(compared to nearly perfect) untill is warms up again. I have a new battery. The float levels are ok, the mixture screws are all between 3.25 and 3.75 turns out and riding at about 600 feet above sea level.

Think I'll have a look at the plugs today.

Two plugs good, one plug mostly white and one all white. White plug mixture screw turned itself in to 2.75 turns out. I backed it out to 3.5 and it idled better. The other screw turned itself in to 3 turns out. Backed it out .25 turn and now at idle sounds like a sewing machine again.

Well, I would think that the mixture screws have very little influence if none at all at any rpms higher than idle.

There are plenty of other devices in the carbs to take care of the mixture then: fuel pilot jets, emusion jets, main fuel jets, pilot air jets, main air jets.

It's more a function of throttle position than of RPM. Even at cruising speed, when you're on "trailing throttle" the pilots do come into play even if the revs are up beyond 5K.
