    fuel level - check!
    bench sync - check!

Now I can't get them back on the engine. Is it okay to lube the boots leading to the engine? Should I mount it on the air intake first?

Ay savy tips from the wizards of the XJ?

Yep. Just a little silicone lube on the boots goes a long way. Make sure the air box is pulled all the way back and then slide the whole rack in carefully. Some like to push in the air box side boots but I haven't found that necessary. Just be sure that you don't damage the intake manifold boots when you wrestle the carbs back into place. Learned that one the hard way and had to chase down a vacuum leak.

Buy yourself an 18" Hardwood Hammer Handle
    Saw-off the top "Split"
    Sand top Knob smooth.

    Use as a "Pry Bar"
Won't mar the Carbs or Engine Cases.

Lube the Carb Necks and Manifold Channels with Brake Fluid of Marvel Mystery Oil.

(After sawing-off the split, ... sculpt an end suitable for prying.)

i have found the trusty heat gun works great, it softens up the manifold and bam, they slip right on, every time, especially at the guy above mentioned you lube em up with wd-40, the pry bar may still be a good idea but i have found on both my fj1100 and xj750k that there is ...no more prying required! just be sure not to tell the old lady puttin back on only took 15 minutes, then devote that time you would usually spend sweatin and swearin on something constructive!!! good luck :)

They are back on!. Old elbow grease, and some actual grease, did the trick.

Went to crank it and had no power. Let's hope it's just the battery. Anyways thanks!

for me the easiest way was to undue the screws holding the airbox (under seat) and then that will give you some play, and then i took off all the rubber pieces conncting the airbox to the carbs, and with a flat haeded screw driver and some small ahnds you can work those pieces back into place once you put your carbs on the engine side rubber mounts.

pretty sure if you looked at it tomorrow it might say Friday.

Last time I did the carbs i siliconed the air box boots up nice and thin, put in a quarter inch of water in a restaurant take out container with the lid on and slowly heated them up till nice and pliable. Put the carbs onto the manifold boots and then squeezed the airbox boots on lastly, zero effort.

Getting them off next time I'm using the girlfriends hair dryer or getting myself an adjustable heat gun.

Rick's hammer handle tool is wonderful. i made one for the carbs, and i use it for a lot of other "gentle persuesion" too. Excellent for times when something needs a beating, and using a rubber mallet or a BFH will just damage it.

The RickOMatic pry bar is the greatest class one lever in the known universe. Apes have been known to fall down in worship after touching it.
