Does anyone happen to have the measured float height spec for an '81 550RH? My Clymer manual uses a much less precise method of measuring fuel level in the tubes rather than actual float height.
These are Mikuni carbs, rather than the Hitachi's

Try this on for size. Specs are on the last page.

    Setting Your Fuel Levels

If you're looking for a dry spec, I don't have one -- even if I did, it'd only get you close, then you'd wet set them anyway.

Your Clymer recommends the more precise method, which is WET-SETTING.

Where the fuel actually stops is the true "float height" a dry, measured setting is only a starting point.

The article schmuck posted the link to is what you need.

I WAS on it...curses, foiled again!

No Joy in Mudville tonight. :(
Tried checking physical (measured) float height with the known good carbs (#1 and 2) and doing a comparo with the two leakers (3 & 4)....all is good. Reassembled and tried doing a wet-set with a home-made rubber tube-thingie I concocted; #1/2 showed fuel level slightly lower than parting flange (all good there!) but 3 & 4 fuel levels kept creeping up until they were over half an inch above the parting seam and fuel would begin running out of the needle jets. Almost appears that the needles are not sealing. These are the Viton-tipped needles from a K&L repair kit. Bear in mind I had no issues with the carbs when they were removed a few years ago other than the leaking fuel tube seals. Is it possible the Viton tipped needles have dried up and are FUBAR'd? (They look ok) Seems like I take one step forward and two back, here....

    Ahhh, but these are Mikunis.

The needle valves could be leaking, sure. But there are o-rings on the OUTSIDE of the valve bodies; if those leak the needle valves essentially get bypassed.

Look closely at the exploded view: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=31061.html

And if you didn't polish the insides of the valve seats, do that too.

Don't forget to make sure the floats aren't hanging too LOW in the bowl. That can cause the needles to bind and not seal.

    THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the same tip from Chacal as well.

That was the trouble! I had a couple appropriate-sized o rings on hand (will be ordering the correct parts from Chacal soon!) and slapped them in because I couldn't stand it any more.....There is Joy in Mudville tonight!
Not only did they not leak, but the wet-set levels are very, very close. I just HAD to throw the bank on and fire it up.....and it did! I've got a ways to go, but this made my week! There IS light at the end of the tunnel!
