I just bought my first motorcycle, a 1980 Maxim 650 for $450 and it runs great. I took the written part of the motorcycle test today and aced it, now I'm gonna take the riding part tomorrow morning. Hope that goes just as well.

Good to see another XJ owner('s) here! Being a member will hopefully ensure a safe, rewarding and beneficial path for you and your bike. These bikes deserve to be saved from the scrap yard and ridden well into the future. I can't even begin to tell you how far I've come, in a short period of time, by reading threads and saving resources in my favorites. I do believe that in another month, I will have the tools and knowhow to tackle my carbs. This is a big step for me and I couldn't do it without the people here being generous with their advice and knowledge. Most definitely a first class bunch all wrapped up around a first class bike...very special indeed!

Best of luck to you on your first bike! Do yourself a favor and improve your chances of keeping your hide in one piece. Take a riders safety course. They will teach you things to help you avoid accidents and how to ride with safe practices. Get the good habits started early, old bad habits are hard to break.

AND the Riders Saftey Course will knock about 10% on your insurance bill.

    Congrats, Dannzeman!!!

Just to echo what the others are saying I'll share an expression from aviation: That piece of paper (plastic) is a license to learn. Never stop learning.

    Congrats!

As others, I highly recommend the MSF course. I think it's saved my life a couple of times!

    Congratulations !
I also echo my cycle riding comrades' comments.
I feel like I get more enjoyment from riding now that I have the Safety Course under my belt.
Enjoy life and live to see another day. :)

When I got my license I was living in Mississippi on Keesler AFB. That was about 22 years ago and the entire driving test consisted of a state trooper following me around one city block and making sure that I followed all of the laws.
The only way it could have been easier is if it were a state that didn't require a special motorcycle license!
