Some may have already read part of my problem which I posted in a different thread. So I am going to start from scratch. I only rode the bike a hand full of times over the winter months. I did not winterize the bike (I know thats a big no no). I installed a new mac 4 into 2 exhaust. After installing the exhaust the bike was only running on 3 cylinders. I had already ordered new carb boots. So I took the carbs off and broke them down and cleaned them in an ultrasonic tank. My boots arrived the following week. Installed boots and carbs (no synch or tune just cleaned). Started bike and it idled around 1500 rpms, nice and smooth. So I went out on a test ride. The bike ran well until it reached 4k rpms. Then it would bog down and accelerate very slowly. I could run it wide open from take off and it had great power and accelerationuntil it 4k. Same as for every gear. When I entered the highway at a quarter or less throttle the bike accelerated smoothly all the way up to 75 mph. As soon as I gave it more than a quarter throttle it would bog down and act like it was running out of gas. Any ideas? Spark plugs pics coming later tonight (having technical difficulties).1,2,3 were a little white and 4 was dark black.

-If you submerged the carbs without breaking the rack and fully disassembling them you may have killed the throttle shaft seals.

-FLOAT LEVELS are critical, they need to be individually wet-set.

-ARE YOUR VALVES IN SPEC? If not, they need to be so that you can...

-do your running vacuum sync, with YICS blocked (if applicable.)

Float levels, valves in spec, proper carb sync with genuinely clean carbs. Anything less is just fooling around.

After all of the above has been attended to, we can get into whether or not the 4-1 will create a need for rejetting.

A "Not-so-scientific" Test may show you if you damaged or need Shaft Seals.

With the Rack held Perpendicular, ... Squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil or Brake Fluid in the Carb, ... right on the Throttle Shaft opening.

    Work the Linkage.
If the Fluid backs-up and puddles; that's a good sign.
    Straight-out, ... Your Seals leak.

    Power Loss:
Common sources of Mid-range and W-O-T poor performance is:
    • Clogged or Inadequately Cleaned Main NOZZLES (Emulsion Tubes).
    • Coils. The Coils on my '83 900 are both history. One had Surgery.
    Battery and Charging:
    • Battery unable to sustain a deep charge. (I'll be going to SEARS, this weekend, for a Battery for my 750). This Winter killed it.
    • Alternator Brushes.. Measure. 10mm or less = Replace.

Do as Polock suggests and inspect the AIR Jets for proper placement.

AIR Jets are configured OPPOSITE from FUEL Jets.
The Larger Jet is the PILOT Jet

Here's a Photo showing correct placement:

Did you use new gaskets on the carb boots? When idling, spray carb cleaner at the joint between th boots and the engine and see if idle changes.

If a Bike "Runs" ... but lacks ability to make Power above 4,000 rpm's ... you must investigate:
    • The Main Nozzles for Cleanliness and Free-flowing Air Orifices.

    • Diaphragm Pistons for friction-free movement.
