Ok they aren't xj carbs but there is a xj piston in the background of a couple pics. These came off a 83 honda shadow 750 a friend of mine just purchased.

couldn't get the slide to go back down.

At least its a single carb!
SOAK IT for like a freakin day
Acid bath or sonic cleaner FOREVER then blow it out, soak it again.
    Polish up that piston slide

I'd suggest you put an in-line cone-shaped fuel filter after all that carb and tank cleaning.

Oh wow 83s were duals? Cool. PITA!
Honda shadows had dual, singles, some years, odd years. Crazy they couldnt stick with it
I had a 2011 Shadow Phantom that was AWESOME
    Fuel injected Shaft Driven.
Bad. Ass. Bike. Sad I got rid of it

ya the inline filter that was on it wouldn't allow any fuel to run through it.

PS. pretty sure black gas is a bad thing

fun part is the owner put a new filter on it when he bought it and has only ran it for maybe 15 minutes total before I went to look at it.

This bike also has 2 fuel tanks the main one up top and a secondary down by the battery/air box right in front of the back tire.

How about planning on a large, disposable paper filter for 1,000 miles, followed by the "discreet" and expensive tiny filter ??

I really don't like these "sintered metal" filters, as they don't seem to have much surface area.

I feel your pain when i bought a virago that sat for 10 years with 1/4 tank of gas. It hardened started oozing out of the petcock as it swelled the carbs had dry gas hard as a rock. Took weeks to get them cleaned and ready . The pilot jet is not accessible in them either. Kept my fingers crossed since its a real pita to install virago carbs but they worked . Used carb dip then put purple cleaner full streangth in my sonic cleaner for a while cleaned with water lots of air pressure blowing every orifice.

Time we have 2 of the large paper ones ready to be installed. the bike actually runs a inline paper filter stock.

I still question weather or not to call it gas.

Got the bike fired up today runs like a champ. I have to extend the wires to the new rear signals to get them routed so the rear seat can go on and she is ready to go.
