does the spring go where this photo shows? and does the filter go with the indent out away from the motor as shown here in the same picture?

    http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.co ... XJ700N.asp

I have mine pulled apart and the filter has the indent facing the motor with the spring between the filter and the motor block.

Just backwards of the picture here.

    Thanks

Good deal. I wonder how long the PO was doing the filter wrong. And i wonder if the filter was even doing anything with it backwards and spring on the wrong side.

    Thanks again

it will drain out about 6oz if you do it fast :)

i let the new oil fall into my new cast iron frying pan. Guess it will be seasoned with 20w-50

Cant taste any worst then some of the truck stops i used to eat at when i was over the road.

Indent is toward the filter casing to make a space for the spring. Spring between the filter and filter casing so as to push the filter in toward the engine to engage seal. If the spring is between the filter and engine it is pushing the filter away from the oil feed and bypassing the oil filter. Spring also serves a second purpose. Should the filter become clogged and stop oil flow the rise in oil pressure will push the filter open and bypass it to allow oil to still flow to the engine.
I shoud also add that the metal washer goes between the spring and the oil seal on the filter. This keeps the spring from cutting into the filter's oil seal.

I was not lucky to having the washer left inside the engine from the PO. Just glad i found the spring on the wrong side. Would have sucked to add another few thousand miles without the oil being filtered.

The part that tipped me off to stop and come look up the diagram. The OLD filter had "FRONT" on one side. Well it was the side facing the engine.

Think i will change the oil and filter out again after this tank of gas.

Just changed the filter and oil for the first time on the 700. I too, found the spring and filter in place wrong. Did not find or see the washer though. I think I am seeing a pattern here. I am glad there are not many miles on ths bike.

the missing washer on mine does not bother me as much as the way the filter was backwards and the spring on wrong side.

Wonder how many others out there have the spring on the wrong side bypassing the filter.
