Are there any automatic chain tensioners that fit the 81 XJ650?

Sure. One from a 750 or any bike that shares the same cylinder block but has an automatic tensioner.

What's wrong with the manual one? I trust my own abilities above that rude contraption (the automatic one.)

I only have experience with the manual tensioners on the XS1100. Very easy to strip out and the set screws dont like to hold. Is that not the case with the 650s?

Dunno for 100% sure, my 650 isn't risen from the dead quite yet.

However, both of my 550s have manual tensioners, and the keys to them are 1: proper metric deepwell sockets; and 2: a torque wrench that's accurate at the low required tightness. I've seen quite a few of the manual tensioners with huge divots in the shaft from obvious over tightening. Had to replace one for exactly that reason.

I've not heard of anybody with a 650 having issues other than getting ahold of a bike with a cracked tensioner body due to the heavyhanded efforts of a PO.

Ok thanks. Ill give it a chance for a while and see how it goes. Maybe the 11 CCTs just arent beefy enough for the size. One of the big issues is a hard downshift can push the shaft out even on a properly tightened bolt.
