    I'm so frustrated!!

I went to ride to work the other day and the bike starts right up but when I pull in the clutch and shift to 1st gear the bike lurches and stalls.

When the clutch is disengaged I can't shift into either 1st or 2nd. I replaced the clutch but I still have the same issue. This is my first bike and I have no idea what might have caused this.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Off the top of my head:
    a) Either the clutch is not adjusted properly and is not disengaging, or:
    b) Either the sidestand safety switch or clutch safety switch is bad. Or both.

You can jumper around the safety switches to eliminate them.

    BTW, welcome to the forum!

    It might be something simple.

The Side Stand Switch Activating Rod sticks in the Bore at the Pivot point.

    Clean the whole shebang.
Roll-up some 400 Finishing Paper and "Ream" the little tunnel clean of rust and oxidation.
    Shine it.

    Lube with Synthetic Waterproof Grease.

If it lurches forward its not the safety switch. Sounds like a cable adjustment issue. How much play is there at the lever?

As Adrian said, if it lurches with the clutch pulled in it doesnt have anything to do with the switch. Try giving it a bit more throttle before shifting and see it it stays running. Do it with a clear run in front of you though just in case.

Good point. does it stall as soon as you shift from neutral to first, or does it stall when you are trying to let the clutch out + take off?

i had a similar issue with my 700. no matter how hard i pulled that clutch lever, the instant the neutral light went out going into first the bike would lurch and stall: the clutch lever & cable tension needed adjustment. it still hits into 1st pretty hard sometimes (usually when its not warmed up) i think the oil i'm running may be a little too viscous at colder temps. but she doesnt stall. theres a little bolt on the clutch lever that affects lever travel, and a couple ways to adjust cable tension. play around with them and let us know how you make out!

When you installed the clutch, did you de-burr/dress the clutch basket? If not the clutch plates could be catching on the basket and not fully disengaging,

It shouldn't work that way. Bypassing it should require "jumpering" it. If disconnecting it worked, the problem is elsewhere like a relay and will probably catch you off guard.

With the clutch in (clutch disengaged) the bike should not lurch (forward).

Some thing else is still wrong..........side stand switch will cause it to stall like that.....I'm tall enough that if that happens I can reach down under the bike and pull the pressure plate out the rest of the way with a hook.....done that enough to know by feel where it is.

But, if you disconnected it, you should need to wire in a jumper. If you're not jumpered and you're running, something else has been bypassed somehow somewhere......

Is ANYONE paying attention to his first post? He pulls the clutch IN therefor dis engaging his clutch, then he puts it in to gear WHILE his clutch is in. When he does that it lurches forward with the clutch DISENGAGED and killing the engine.

This screams clutch misadjustment or clutch binding.

Sorry for the caps, I am not screaming, just trying to highlite key points.

Methinks somebody's been playing with the wiring. Sounds like maybe the clutch safety switch has already been disabled. At any rate, she says it works, so it must be safety-switch related.
