What do you mean 'It is getting too much air' ?

Do you mean that the engine is running weak, that it will not start, that it pops and farts on the over-run or that it chatters too much ?

If you really wanted to you could cut pieces of inner tube to slip over the filters, but that would only affect higher speed running. You could oil the filters if you have not done that, or maybe you need to raise the needles one position in the carb - that's getting into tuning the carbs, which I suspect you're not ready for, as you'll want the use of a colortune kit if you're going to twiddle the air mixture screws too.

Best to go back to the question I asked first. What is the problem that needs to be fixed ?

It is not a matter of the carbs getting to much air. Actually, they are not getting enough air to operate correctly. The change over to pod filters changed the airflow to the carbs causing them to not operate properly.

You will have to rejet the carbs, and do a search on pod filters to find out how to correct the problems you will deal with.

    Ummmm......

Well I don't know what brand of filters he has used. K&N were the most popular ones for many years and they claim to reduce air restriction. Their website info on filters is here: http://www.knfilters.com/cold_air_intakes.htm

It does lose the benefit of any work Yamaha did on getting the most efficient air inlet shape in the air box, so I'm not recommending pod filters, not least because I always thought they would suffer from rain. (We get that in the UK..) On the other hand, the issue is not that the carbs don't get enough air, though the inlet will obviously work slightly differently without any of the harmonics you would expect a company that makes very good flutes and woodwind instruments to understand.

On the other hand, the bike (XJ550) that I've run for 23 years on and off has never had an air filter (I only recently fixed the airbox so I can actually contemplate buying the filter) and it has run pretty well, so it begs the question, what is actually wrong with how this bike is running.

Poor performance is not uncommon when Pods are substituted for the stock Airbox and Boots.

There has been nearly 30 Years of experimentation.

I know them Pods look "Bitchin" on that Bobber.
But, before you begin experimenting with work-arounds trying to fine tune for those Pods; you should FIRST do "A BigFitz" prep.

    Adjust the Valves.

Re-fit the Airbox and get dialed-in to the hairy-edge of fine tuning, ... stock.
(Consider having the Airbox decorated by a starving artist who's a wiz with an Airbrush set-up.)

Once, you have the Bike operating at it's PEAK Performance, you can experiment with Mods while having a state of fine tuning to quickly return to if the Pod-thing doesn't work-out for you!
