Purchased the bike last week, have few questions,
took it for a spin around the block few hours ago, and noticed that the headlight is pretty dim, is that a sealed unit on these bikes stock?
Also in my 03 Ram i installed HIDs, and it made a huge difference, would something be ... do-able in the maxim? anyone did that?

The stock headlight could be either a sealed beam or a replaceable H4 -- you'll have to open it up and check.

Either way it could be getting old, so getting a bit dim. Or it could be not seeing the full voltage at the bulb - crappy stock wiring, corroded connectors, that kind of things.

It's also possible to do an upgrade to an HID setup, as some places do have them for motorcycles -- but to be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone doing it to an XJ, simply because of the cost factor. Just too much to spend on a ~25 year old bike, when a custom wiring kit and new Nighthawk bulb works just as well for less than $75

I replaced my stock sealed beam with a H4 lens and a silverstar bulb. The new light is 1000 times better.

I installed an HID kit on my ducati, uses an H4 bulb as well and its a billion times better, only problem is its a single balast, single xenon kit, so no hi-low beams, just high.
