Has very many had any luck with running straight pipes and ditching the factory mufflers on an xj1100?

It tends to make you run lean, so you would closely watch your plugs to indicate bigger jets.
It attracts cops and gives almost no horsepower, but it might save lives - many lives.

I was afraid of that. I had an xs750 with a straight pipe and miss the loud that it created when riding.
Good thing is I'm in Virginia they have no regulations on loudness for a bike :D

    Unless your in PWC Virginia
They dont care about laws. They hear you? Youre pulled over. And if youre pulled over? They'll FIND something to fine you for.

I did straight pipes on my xj1100 and went to 117.5 main jets and 50 pilot jets and runs like a champ and plugs look just right too. So far so good. Oh yeah i did 4 into 2 straight pipes.

Yeah, right... I got almost run off the road three times when I had straight pipes.

I'd say quiet pipes save more lives because they don't wake up wives.

well, i cant speak on the 1100 and its probably entirely different, but on my 650 i removed the mufflers but left the collector box underneath, and i have inserted baffles and had them open, a modest difference in sound and power. i really like the nice low sound of the open ones, but im running lean so im going to rejet i think. i wasnt sure if i could just adjust the mixture screws, which are still capped, to remedy this. still havent actually determined if i should try that first, or leave that for the pros *shrug*.

they really arent TOO loud, but they have this really killer resonance when certain distances away from the bike. imo, its awesome. others may not think so. the baffles in reduced the sound, but felt like i was being too restrictive. like i was going to blow up my engine from not letting enough gasses out or something. hard to explain, but just felt like i needed to let them loose a bit. im now tossing around a few ideas to mediate my issues. i want some sort of material in there securely to help with well, idk exactly, but i was thinking of just getting the packing used around baffles. has anybody done this? will it even work? packing sans baffle, secured somehow between the collector box and the tips i plan on getting eventually?

i still have pretty solid horsepower at low and high speeds. and it sounds like im in hyper overdrive space travel at high speeds when it kicks in. its quite enjoyable...

i will say, despite what others have said about losing the mufflers, in my experience thus far, i have kept most of the properties that it had with them on. just running lean currently. i do believe the box underneath is more helpful than 1 might expect.

i will also add, coming and going is becoming a bit worrisome. i feel like my neighbors are starting to hate me, even though they really arent THAT loud and we live next to a freeway, but i just feel kinda bad regardless.

that and my wife easily catches me sneaking off lol
