I've acquired my bike via a friend who just couldn't get it to run right. He got it from his brother for the same reason. Thanks to this site and all of you I've learned a lot and am almost ready to hit the road :)
This bike came with a windshield :) and sponge pods for air cleaners. My buddy showed me where he keeps the plastic baggies and said I have to cover the pods so they don't get water in them 8O The first thing that popped in my head was when I got caught in a sudden thunderstorm in the middle of nowhere, on my other bike. I'm debating on finding an original airbox now. Especially after reading all the topics on it.
Thanks to all of you I have rebuilt the carbs and learned how to wet set the floats. Even though I seem to have an oddity in the carb department sure enough I found a post complete with pics and step by step for my model. I'm looking forward to doing the carb sync as soon as I check my valves. Now she even starts right up and idles sweet 8)

Go crazy and do EFI....I need a good starting map :)

IF you can find an air box that is the easiest way to get back to stock performance and the fun behavior of the X

The Mikuni carbs are finicky bastards though!

Five-valve motors don't need YICS, they're F1 motors in disguise.

By all means, check the valves ASAP, but be prepared if any need adjusting: on the "X" the cams gotta come out.

You don't have an oddity, you have an "X" motor, it's a light-year or two ahead of the rest of our XJs. Why anyone in his right mind (OK, nevermind) would put PODS on an X-motor beats me. What, it wasn't "hot" enough? It's a freakin' FZ in cruiser duds, fer cryinoutloud.

I'd highly recommend the stock setup. It will scare you. Aside from maybe the V-Max, they simply don't put "cruisers" like that on the street anymore.

bigfitz52 thanks for the info and the heads up. I'm more excited then ever to get this under my butt. After it's ready of course.

I did not expect such a quick response. Thank you both for the warm welcome

An old buddy of mine had Plum Crazy Pontiac purple on his Triumph. I always luved the way it looked. I vowed I'd have something painted that color someday.

Now, now. Not "finicky." Sensitive; or should I say "sohnsitave" (to quote Bugs Bunny.) Rewarding of precision. NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY.

BUT--- get them right and you can forget about them for a good long time.

***EDIT*** Hey! You still got the Sporty? Lookit my sig; the Norton is still alive (battery on the charger right now.)

Wow  nice breakdown. I've done a few Holley's and Carters in my day. As well as a couple carbs here and there off the kids toys. So, I had a clue when I got in there. But this is great stuff. Thank you for the link. I will look it over.
