    Hi Guys

Clutch question. My Maxim has about 18,000 on the clock. I lubed all the cables and adjusted the clutch at the lever. I have about 1/16-1/8" gap on the lever. How can I tell if the clutch is going? This reason I ask is because it does not seem to engage until the lever is almost at rest. Where should it engage?

Fitz (I know you are out there)..I read your write up on the clutch rebuild. I did not see a list of new parts that were installed other than the bolts and springs. Did I miss a parts list? I get hung up on pictures..you know with the ADD and all.

    Thanks

I didn't include a parts list because the parts required will vary from bike to bike, depending on condition of the original parts (basket, hub, plain plates.)

If your hub and basket are OK and the plain plates clean up nicely with Scotchbrite; then the only parts you'll need are a set of friction plates plus the aforementioned bolts, springs, and of course a new gasket.

I specifically mentioned the springs and bolts because no matter what "degree" of rebuild you end up doing, you'll always want to replace those with NEW.

Thanks BigFitz How can I tell if the clutch needs service. Will all the adjustment be out of the lever at that point? Is there any need to adjust the cable at the case?

    Thanks!

If it's the original, 30-year old clutch, it needs service.

Original friction plates often quit doing their job (gripping) even if they still measure within the "wear" spec. The friction pads turn into little crumbly bits of linoleum when they dry out from sitting.

You shouldn't need to adjust the lever at the lower end unless it's not giving enough "throw" to disengage the clutch.
