I borrowed a compression tester and checked the compression on my XJ650. I disconnected the electronic module and checked all with the engine warm, the plugs all out and with the throttle wide open. Here is what I got.

    4 - 130
    3 - 125
    2 - 120
    1 - 130

All of the plugs looked like they were burning good. All were light brown.

I adjusted all the valves a few hundred miles back using the write up from the site. Thank You

    I put in new plugs.

I balanced the carbs the best I could with a 4 vacuum gage set. The set has little plastic valves that allow you to throttle them down. I cannot get this old girl to idle nice. The balancing seems to shift around. I sprayed some starting fluid around the carbs and did not get any real racing, there was some but I think it may because the intake were pulling it in.

Any ideas from the experts or is it time to put the old girl down?

By no means a mechanic but kinda have a similar problem. Have you cleaned your carbs ever? If so did you replace the pilot screw o ring. I have xj550 which has a YICS system in it and needs to be blocked in order to sync you carbs with a vacuum gauge. Again just a rookies point of view.

The answer to your question is: When you have to clean and sync of course. LOL
Did you block off the YICS?

Have you made sure your gauge valves arent closed too much and making the needles stick?
