Yes yes, another newb with a question about carburetors! Mine is a bit different from what I have found though, and hoping you guys can help.

Im actually on here researching for a friend that is looking to buy an 82 XJ1100. The bike is in decent condition, with on glaring problem. That carbs are missing! Owner says they were stolen, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.

My big question is, what exactly can I do to replace the carbs? I have been told from a few folks that the carbs from the earlier XS1100 model will work, but I'm not so sure that's correct. Aren't they jetted a bit differently because of the YICS system? I also think the choke set up is a bit different.

If I can use the carbs and simply re-jet them, what jets do you all suggest using?
    Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind is that the 82 XJ1100 was only sold for one year in the US and parts are difficult to find. You'll be looking for Mikuni carbs, but even if you find them on ebay you're looking at two to three hundred dollars, and they'll probably need to be rebuilt.
Chacal sells the rebuild kits (click the link at the top of the page) but you're looking at $300 ish for a total rebuild kit that will do all four carbs .... unless you're getting the bike dirt cheap and/or super clean, I'd pass this one up if it was me ... you're looking at probably $600 total to get the carbs done and right.

the price on the bike is only $500, but budget is limited. I'd hate to have him dump that much money into it.

So I take it as a no on using the carbs from an XS1100?

Hate to bump, but its kind of urgent for me. Don't want a friend dropping that kind of money on a bike thats going to be too costly to get rolling.
If that is the case though and anyone on here wants details on the bike for their own purposes, let me know.

i would pass on it an entire new carb set is likely going to cost +$500 so unless you get the bike for $100-$200 its just gunna eat up your whole budget, because im sure its going to need more than some carb work

yeah, I understand that. I found a carb set on ebay for around $250 and with the rebuild kit, and then getting them synched.. it all seems like more trouble than its worth for the condition the rest of the bike is in.
Like I said, my main concern was being told that the XS1100 carbs would work on it, which I have found much cheaper, but I'm confident they aren't the same set up. Maybe similar, but not close enough.
Thanks for all the help on here, even though the bike probably wont be bought, if anyone in or around southern Indiana would like details on the bike, let me know.

Yea.... without carbs that bike is probably destined to become parts :(
