this came with the bike it was in the box above the tail light, along with a lock chain ( that matches my key!) and a few old registrations and such. any one have an idea of what it is/does? does it even have anything to do with motorcycles?

The ends appear to be made to lock into something and the rounded part is too imprecise to be anything more than a handle.

If the ends were shaped differently I'd say it almost looks like a car radio extraction tool.

    It's NOT a Yamaha tool.

Good fortune on finding the chain lock though. It's not uber-practical (kinda too short) but it's neat to have the one that matches your bike.

Actually, to me it looks like the ends are supposed to be tied together. Seems like a funny kind of a hose clamp.

Could it be used to hold both ends of a opened chain close to each other while putting the linkage back on?

my original thought was something for the chain, as the ends do lok like they would fit between the links of a chain, and the join at the top looks like a mini chain linkage as well.

if that fit around the airbox tubes to pull them back out of the airbox it would be a 100$ tool

That looks like it fits on the helmet lock on the side of the seat. Has th PO made a custom holder to go through his helmet face opening?

Looks like a lock of some sort. Looks like it clicks in to a paddle lock bottom.

On the left side of the bike under the seat (round where the clip is to lift the seat) the lock is normally on the side panel. (That's where it is on my xj550 anyway).

On the 550 Maxim, the seat lock is bolted to the frame on the left side, just in front of the shock mount. It's doesn't stick thru the sidecover like on the "Seca" styled 550s.

It looks similar to a bicycle lock (minus the lock) that a friend of mine had in Jr. High. Have you contacted the PO to see if he knows what it is? Maybe he stashed it and forgot about it.
