    Hello,
My name is Brett, I just picked up my first motorcycle about a month ago.
    It is a 1980 XJ 650 maxim, with 27000 k on it.
I have loved the bike so far, but I just have a couple questions to ask.
What kind of fuel mileage should I expect with this bike?
Also I would like to put a windshield on it, just wondering if anyone had some tips for shopping for one?
    Heres my bike:

Hey Beekman, sorry for no answers, some slip through.

First, nice bike. For some reason, I'm quite partial to that stepped seat. I must be getting old =). Looks to be in very nice shape too.

I'd guess that 45mpg is a fair guess for meager riding on the 650. Some posted on another thread that the 550 can be 50+, so I'd say 45 is pretty close.

I had a slipstream (don't remember the model) that was on my 700 when I got it. Nice looking, but a little small for me. Still got buffeted around, so I put my larger screen on it. Pictures with the slipstream in my gallery. I think they are around 70 - 80 $ us, but may be found cheaper via ebay or CL.

A few things; with 4-1 header / exhaust, it may change the fuel/air mix, so you may be running lean. Colored header pipes usually mean more than normal heat, from a lean condition. Jetting may need to be addressed.

Also, valves may need to be checked, which should be done before any carb changes. Also the brakes should be looked at, as delamination can happen on rear, and old lines fail on the front.

    Have fun, nice bike.

oooh, I really love that seat. Is that an aftermarket thing?
    I'm getting 45 mpg with my 1981 650 Maxim.
    Welcome to the forums.

    Thanks for the welcomes.
I don't know if the seat is aftermarket, previous owner did not say, but it is one of the reasons I wanted the bike haha.
My fuel mileage seems to be about 45 mpg, but sometimes between 35 to 40.

My exhaust has a stronger than normal fuel smell to it, could that be be because of what you mentioned pjk_xj700, due to the exhaust causing a need for a change in jetting?
