OK what size of saddle bags, length, height, and depth, would best fit my 83 XJ750 Maxim? I do not want to go with hard case ones.

I got mine from the Dealer for only $30.00

They are the ones that Yam gave to those who bought a STAR Model during a "Free Bags" promotion.

    They are 2-Piece.
You have to Shoe-lace adjust the throw-over part.
Add washers between the Seat Foundation and Locking Clips.
Cut an Oval in each side for the Seat Locking Pall to pass through.

    34cm-L X 24cm-H X 14cm-W

I have the Cortech Sport Saddlebags and I'm very happy with them. (link below) The only catch is you will probably have to move your rear turn signals to use them. I have an '82 XJ1100 and I had to move mine to make them work. To be honest I think you may have to move your turn signals to use nearly any bag of a decent size. I would have had to.
If you'd like, PM me and I can send you some pics of how I moved mine and how the bags fit...

I've got a set of the cortech ones too, and I DID move my signals to make them work with a passenger. If you only want to ride solo, they fit from just behind your heels to butt up against the signals. I had my Velcro center adjusted so they sat on the passengers foot pegs (nice for solo riding). Ultimately what I did was build a rack that attached to the sissy bar rack mounting holes and relocated my signals back some 8-12 inches. That way I can ride with a passenger and various cargo.

I got a set of Twin Soft Leather Saddlebags from the Dealership for $25.00

They came as a Standard Accessory on the big STAR Cruisers.

    Stock, ... they look silly.

Remove the cheap shiny do-dads and shorten the "Fringe".
Treat the Bags with Mink Oil and let dry.

Most STAR Bike Buyers left them off, ... they looked so out-of-place on the Big Bike.

You have to do some Custom-fitting.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I'm going to get the other bags and then post up my review of them later. I like the style of Viking much more.

If you are looking for real good luggage for travel, I have some suggestions.

There are a couple new lines of soft luggage from Nelson-Rigg, Kriega, Wolfman, Ortleib, Helen-2-Wheels and a couple more built on the boating "drybag" principle - completely waterproof material where the opening is folded several times and either cinched or strapped shut to provide completely waterproof soft luggage. The Nelson-Rigg Adventure Dry Bag, Wolfman Expedition Dry, Ortleib Rack Pack and Kriega UScombo 30/40/50/70 (liter) Drypacks (all tail bags) have gotten good reviews. Many have matching soft panniers.

There is another very popular form of large, soft-side tail bag that has a self-supporting bottom (but all need rain covers) from MotoFizz (Camping Seat Bag), Wolfman (Beta Plus), Nelson-Rigg (GWR 1000), Saddlemen (TS3200), BMW Motorrad (Large Softbag 2), Gears (Navigator Tail Bag), Black Moose Racing (Expedition Tail Pack), etc.

Lots of good options depending on how much stuff you want to carry, what kind of bag(s) you want to strap on (and if you want to go with tail bag, panniers, or both), if being totally waterproof is a factor, and how much you want to spend.

    I picked this up http://www.vikingbags.com/kawasaki-vulc ... 0-prd1.htm

You can use the mounting hardware included or you can just go and buy a easy bracket that fits...

Theres more and more good options nowadays so its harder to choose. Also, CHECK EBAY FOR GOOD OPTIONS. Good deals to be had... lots of people are unloading stuff for Christmas.
