    Answer the door.
    Then check your motor!

    Bur seriously; describe "knocking"......
Is it an actual "knock" or a "ticking" sound?

Use an empty paper towel tube and isolate the source........top end or lower end?
    Lower end= bad
    Top end = fixable.
    Inquiring minds want to know!

What's your ideal set at (RPM's)? From what I've heard/read and seen 1000 is a good number.

mine has similar symptoms, including the clutch action changing the sound. I think the sound is coming more from the rear of the case on mine.

I found that running an idle around 1700 makes the noise less noticable.

Cut a piece of fiberglass rod from an orange driveway marker and probe the engine.

Listen to the end of the rod while you touch the other end to areas that you suspect the knock is coming from.

You should listen to the engine and have someone work the throttle and disconnect a plug wire and put it back on ... for all four plugs.

You will hear a knock above the regular rotational and valve train noises.
If you probe for a knock ... and DON'T hear the knock happening in the usual rotational and machine noises ...

    Look for an exhaust leak.

i think it could be low octane fuel . i only had alitte 87 octane then i put in some 91 octane gunna try some octane boost. hopefully that helps. i have another problem too. im not sure if its oil or gas gettin in the exhaust pipes. but after about 10 mins of running her the pipes start smokin. i dunno if its a leak from the engine . the smoke comes from where the exhaust goes from 2 to one on the right side.

I'm not at all surprised. About this time, last year, I was getting gas in New England, that was causing my bike to knock. I wrote it up because it was pretty severe and I didn't want anybody having a problem elsewhere.

You could have some worn rings and burnin' a little oil, if it's possible for you to do a compression check I would do it. Oil used to leak a little on my old maxim from around the oil pressure switch on the bottom of the motor right above the exhaust collector.....it would get hot and start burnin' the oil and smoking quite a bit till it all burnt off.
