Replace oil filter housing with Char's spin on filter. Started bike after oil change ran 5 min while checking for leaks and then shut down. Next, I replaced a worn clutch cable. Bike won't start now. (Neutral light on). Start sounds like it is not engaging. (Lots of spinning but engine not turning over). Is this a clutch cable problem? Or a starter that just happen to go out at the same time as the cable replacement?

    Thanks

Mobil 1 20 w 50. Synthetic for motorcycles. In Cinccinnati, and the temps no cooler than 60 F.

Seriously, if I change the oil, the starter will fully engage and turn over the engine? Seems to simple, but I'm up for it. Guess its better than inspecting the top in for some kind of seize!

Synthetics are too slippery for wet clutch engines. It's a particularly bad problem on XJs because the starter clutch is a sprague type that uses rollers which grab onto a relatively smooth "shoulder" on the gear that tuns the chain, that in turn (snicker) turns the engine over.
It might take more than one oil change for the problem to go away.

Ok! Sold! I'm out of town for two days, but when I return, I'll change the oil to a non synthetic! Any other suggestions to quicken the relief of the started slipping?

I,ve been running a semi synthetic in the xj650 for some time now and have had no problems with the starter motor or clutch The motor has over 90,000 kms on it , so I,d imagine it,s fairly worn in there. It seems to run smoother with the semi -synth. and I like the better shear protection that it gives, cheers, Murray

I've had Rotella T6 full synthetic in the bike all this year and haven't had a problem. It seems to run better on it i think. It's rated for wet clutches tho, maybe what you used isn't JASO MA rated?

No, it stated for wet clutches, by who knows. I'll try the standard oil and let you guys know what happens!

    Well gentleman,

The verdict is in! My XJ750 does not like synthetic oils. As soon as I switched to conventional oil, she started right up and I haven't had a problem since.

    Thanks again for the help!
