I am in need of a 2.55mm valve shim. I have made calls to various Yamaha shops and have been been told about several different options. Should I go with an o.e. shim or an aftermarket shim?

PM me......I have a shim pool. I have two 255's right now. Doesn't matter if you use OEM or aftermarket

PM and I'll get details to you.

Hm......Yamaha shops are giving you various options? About the only option you have is: oem or aftermarket--- I guess the other option would be to not swap the shim, which wouldn't be a smart option. LOL

I had to take off a few 0/1000mm from the 29mm diameter shim today, a little too wide to fit in the bucket.

It was an aftermarket shim that was wider than oem, it needed precision tailoring to fit nice and snug lol

That sounds so sketch. It's seriously not worth skimping the money to rig up some ghetto shit.

    Hit up Dave.

It might have been a 29.5mm shim instead of a 29mm shim. Those are for Suzuki, I think. I got one of those with some shims I bought from a shop. Aftermarket shims are the same 29mm as the original ones and don't need any grinding.

Given your username, I think you might be using a Jawa fixing technique. :D

Then either that was a wrong size shim to begin with, or it was a wrong shim to begin with.............

Yeah, you got the right idea 8O Xoi jiv!

It was a 29mm shim, checked with the caliper. I think the shim retainer has gotten tight over time. The original shim it replaced was smaller - about 28.85mm

Just found that out about the Suzuki shims today. I have a 1982 Suzuki GS850L for parts and tried to see if those shims fit my Maxim. Nope. Just a tad too large.

    Wait... I HAVE IT!

It was the wrong size shim to begin with. 8O

You can't grind shims. Let's don't even hint that it's a good idea when it's not. Use the right ones.
