Stuck Oil Filter bolt - 1985 XJ700

It just won't budge. Took off the exhaust system just so I could get to it better. Still won't move.

Am I missing something? Any ideas?

if you can get your hands on a cordless impact and do it in small bursts that will prob get it done, i have had to use mine many times on old bikes.

 

Either a stripped bolt bit or just grind it down and unscrew the rest off once you get the cover off

 

After all else failed...I cut through the housing with a grinder. Done.

I couldnt get mine to budge no matter what. So I hit it with my blacksmith hammer a bunch of times till the damaged/seized bolt broke off at the threads, cracked the housing, but its apart, and oddly the threads werent frozen, idk wtf was keeping it from moving, but ill get the spin on adapter from XJ4ever to prevent this crap from happening again.

 

I remove the Header Pipes and put a Medium-sized Pipe Wrench on the Shouldered section of the Oil Filter Bolt.

I have had to resort to the Angle Grinder Method a few times.

Generally speaking, ... when you find a Oil Filter Bolt seized ... you can bet the Oil Filter hasn't been touched in awhile.

 

No kidding, there was also evidence of water in the oil (indicated by a foul smelling grey concoction on the drain bolt) Same goes on the rear diff. The fill port looked fine, drained, whooooaaa boy that was gnarly.

Yay for bad prior owner maintenance!

 

Did you try the cordless impact wrench first? I used one on mine and it worked prior to grinding. Just curious about time and effort with impact wrench.
